Accessibility features in Bangladesh Govt. websites.

The facility of using a website is considered a right. Citizens of any country preserve the right to surf or access a website. But the Person with Disability (PwD) may face problems while surfing a website that is not made with accessibility features for them.

Bangladesh is one of the countries among 164 that have signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). As part of this government is working to make public places more accessible for disabled people. As a result, we see Bus stands, river ports, railway stations in Bangladesh with accessibility features. In addition, govern has made a central website, where the information of more than 25000 government offices is found. Fortunately, this central website and other websites under this have some important accessibility features that can make these sites comfortable to use by any PwD. All of these accessibility features are available on every website of the government. In this post, we see those accessibility features.

Font Size: From this feature, a PwD can maximize or minimize the font size of this website.

Font size options are at the top (3 A). A- decrease size, A0 normal size, A+increase size

Monochrome: helps the colorblind or a person with a similar problem to surf the web comfortably. The outlook of a monochrome website can be White, Black, or Grey.

Monochrome color (Grey)

Invert Color: This accessibility feature is also used for color-blind or visually impaired people. Normally black background and white font color are preferred and used. You can like to read: Why are Inverted Colors considered an accessibility feature?

Big Cursor: This accessibility feature is very much helpful to a web user with a low vision problem.

Highlight Links: With this feature, a PwD can easily identify the content having a hyperlink.

Hyperlinks

Show Headings: with this feature a PwD can easily identify text that has been used as a heading for any content.

Headings

Reading Guide: When a PwD reads a content line by line this feature is used so that he or she does not miss any lie to read.

The Yellow bar/line is the reading guide.

Reset: This feature of this web site/s resets all the accessibility features to a normal view.

Keyboard Shortcut: PwD can customize the shortcuts if he/she wants to use the website. Unfortunately, I did not see this option working.

Download Screen Recorder: A PwD can download a screen reader from this link.

Reset, Keyboard shortcut, and download screen reader options are at the bottom.

What a wonderful feature :+1:

We use websites daily without thinking about how people with disabilities cope with normal websites.

Thank you for a deep synopsis @MukulR

Great write-up.

Yes, you got the point, every day we surf websites but we never think of their accessibility features. I think the main cause of it is, we think PwD cannot use websites or they do not need to use any website. I want to give special thanks to our government that they have considered the web accessibility features seriously. Thanks to you for reading this post and making a valuable comment @TusharSuradkar Dada.

@MukulR

You have been very good in advocating, holding meetup and writing posts on accessibility these days. Well done !!!

It is good to think of others in a less favoured conditions in life.

This is a nice post and a great thing for the Bangladeshi government to include those with special needs in their website. It’s a rare thing so their efforts should be commended.

Thank you for sharing it with us on connect

Cheers
