RECAP Google Maps for Heritage Researchers Workshop

This is the RECAP of the workshop organized by the Centre for Heritage Studies, University of Kelaniya. The aim of this workshop is to provide basic training on using Google Maps and related products for heritage related research work carried out by the researchers in the heritage in Sri Lanka. Introducing the Local Guides program to these heritage researchers was another goal of this workshop. This was included in the workshop to show the participants how they can use the Google Maps to record heritage sites in Sri Lanka. The following video on Google Local Guides "Local Hero" video series explain the importance of the recording the archaeological sites in Sri Lanka.

The organizers were expecting 40 participants for the workshop and finally there were 57 participants including heritage researches from universities, museums, and other heritage related institutes. They included university lectures, students, independent researchers, etc....  Although May 19, 2018 and May 20, 2018 were rainy days all the participants were there for the workshop.

The workshop was started with the introduction to the Google Maps. Then they were introduce to the Google Earth. For some, this was the first time they used the new Google Earth. They were amazed by the 3D images and the stories in the Google Earth voyager.

During the workshop...

The second session was on Google MyMaps. This session showed them the power of Google MyMaps to record the archaeological and other explorations. The participants were very creative and they were talking about new ways they can use Google MyMaps in their research work. Here are few Google MyMaps created by them.

Amazing Ella by @sithara_mahalekam

Tour of Polonnaruwa by Kasun Jayasuriya

Tour of Udawatta Kele by Dumendra Jayasanka

Touring Gampaha by Indrachapa Gunasekara

The next session was on Google Tour builder and they were really happy. The power of story telling using this tool was something they have never experienced.

The last session on first day was on creating immersive virtual reality tours using Tour Creator, a new tool by Google. They were amazed by the power of this tool and they said they could use this tool in archaeological excavations to record the progress. Here are few tours created by them.

Assam by Sanjeewani widyarathna

Palace of Knossos by Anushan Sashika

Russian Fairy Tale Background by Dilshani Dabare

Ancient places at Gampaha by Sewwandi Manorathna

These are tours they created for the first time.I hope you all will enjoy them.

During a break....

The following day was started with Google Cardboard to see the archaeological and other heritage sites around the world. Most of the participants were experiencing this for the first time. It was a great experience for me as they enjoyed it a lot. The demonstration of taking 360 photos using a Ricoh Theta V was done.

The next session was on Google Fusion Tables. In this session they learned how they can use this as a collaborative tool to create simple database and visualize the data in different ways.

Group photo....

Finally the certificates were distributed among the participants.

Certificate...

Please see the recap video of the workshop. It is little bit long but listen to their feedback at the end. They were happy about the program and they said they could use thees tools in their future research work and it will help them to improve their work. Also they were very excited about the Local Guides program and more than 30 new local guides join the program and they were introduced to the  Local Guides Connect.

Hope this will inspire others to protect our heritage to the future generation. @TraciC @IlankovanT @KarenVChin @SoniaK @OSAMA  have a look.

Re: RECAP Google Maps for Heritage Researchers Workshop

This is awesome @AnuradhaP. I know you have been heavily promoting this amazing learning experience in all of your social channels in the past week. But to see all of the components in one post is amazing.

It's very impressive to see how you have taken these free Google tools and created something incredible. Then, you go and teach others, these great tools, including the Local Guides program to expand their world and to help them better create and provide key info into Google Earth. about your country and its rich history and heritage.

Like @IlankovanT, you Sri Lanka Local Guides are true inspirational assets, shining stars to us here in the Connect Community.  You make me humble.

Cheers,

Karen

Re: RECAP Google Maps for Heritage Researchers Workshop

@KarenVChin Thanks. I was promoting these activities to encourage people. At least one person will start to do something new. I have seen that more Sri Lankans have started to hosting meetups.

It was amazing to see how people think creatively and use simple tools in different ways.
