Over the coming days everyone who applied for this year’s Local Guides event, Connect Live 2018, will receive an email about whether or not they have been selected to attend. I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for submitting their applications and let you know how much fun the team had in reviewing the thousands (yes, THOUSANDS) of applications.

We have selected 151 Local Guides to represent the global community at Connect Live 2018. That’s right: you heard it here first that we selected an extra Local Guide to share information back with the community!

Every person selected was carefully reviewed by the team and chosen for a very special reason. While some may not share their status just yet, we ask you to be patient as they work through their excitement — and the details.

Overall, it was inspiring to see how committed many of you are to the Local Guides community on top of making fantastic contributions to Google Maps: helping your local community by adding new places, creating lists to help others exploring your area, and hosting meet-ups to connect locally, just to name a few. It was fun learning about your specific passions, too. Whether you were one of the vegan foodies, accessibility champions, or rappers (yes, there were rappers!), you help to keep Connect a warm and welcoming place for Local Guides no matter where in the world you may call home.

I’m proud to be a Local Guide and I look forward to seeing our global community grow over the coming weeks, months, and years, especially here on Connect.

Hi everyone. This is Walter Silva, from Itanhaem, Sao Paulo, Brazil. 

The Local Guides Connect Live 2018, in San Francisco - CA, is getting closer and the 150 lucky guides were already chosen. Today, though, I knew that one of them had his American Visa denied by the Consulate of the United States of America, and will not be able to join the event. I also know that another one doesn't even speak English. Probably, many more are facing the same problem. 

Will Google check it out and see if all the 150 can join that amazing event?

If some of them don't fill the requirements, will Google choose other candidates?

According to this page, an alternate attendee will be selected if someone's visa has been denied. This question of interest to you would be near the bottom:

"Traveling to the United States became more difficult in past year; will my country of origin impact my ability to apply for or attend Connect Live?

Attendees will be selected to attend the event based on the criteria listed above and not on their country of origin. Google will be working with a third-party travel agency to navigate and expedite the visa application process, following all government laws. However, if you are selected and your visa application is denied, an alternative attendee will be selected to attend.

You can learn more about traveling to the United States by visiting travel.state.gov."

If you're chosen as an attendee, you'll receive an email from the team, so you can continue to monitor your inbox (including spam folders).

Unfortunately, I wasn't selected for the Connect Live 2018. Even so, I really got sad when I knew that one of the 150 didn't get the American Visa (as it was asked in the application form) and is not going to visit Google Plex. I am sure that many attendees around the world already hold the visa and could join the event. 

How about the other person that doesn't even speak English? How is he going to understand everything? Would he be able to answer a few questions if you give him a call?

I hope you guys will find the right people to give this wonderful opportunity.

@waltersilvabrazil: No, not all the selected attendees already have a US visa. This was not one of the requirement to apply for the event. It was asked so that the Local Guide team know ahead of time who will need an invitation letter for the application of a US visa. 

As for English, as per the post I had provided previously, attendees need to confirm that they can speak English.

It was advised that US visa has to be arranged by the applicant on their own on selection. It was not a pre-condition. 
The proficiency of speaking English was required to be declared & supported by a One-Minute video in English as to why they want to apply for Local Guides Meet. 

The person's video upload is a pre-condition to consider in the selection process. 

There is no reason to find fault with the system.

There are many Local guides of Level 9 & Level 10 have not been selected even for the first time. 

It is not that their contributions are not commendable.

The fact should be the selected must be more deserving than the leftovers. 

It is undeniable that all those commendable applicant cannot be selected within the narrow 150 places.

All that we can do is to suggest the administration to increase the number of attendees or the frequencies of meet or increase the venues - even region wise to accommodate more Local Guides if Visa & immigration is the concern. ...with increasing popularity of Google Maps on account of the contributors Google Administration can think of the above suggestion.

Anyhow, Some LG's work as pastime; most of the Local Guides do not work on Google Maps for remuneration or other benefits but for pleasure of sharing what they know. 

They do consider the invitations for a meet at USA as a honour to them whether selected or not.

Let us go ahead with more contribution to excel our own status & await a chance in 2019!

This is not the platform for blaming some ones. See friends each and every person is Right from his/her own angle of point of view. What is the matter.?

Just curious to know that have you varyfied the authentication for any one's visa got denied by us authority.? You may be right because you know something better than me. If it is so, rest of close GLGs will get an opportunity to be LIVE from Dead..I am sure he/she will be much much happier than those are selected earlier, due to surprised Gift from Google..

Anyway Best Wishes might still be offered now...& i Will be grateful to take this opportunity to Wish them for their Best Luck, who have deserved so closely.

Let us believe that Google Maps grow bigger with more features so as to require more attendees for the summit.

The first event (it was called Local Guides Summit) was back in 2016 and 75 applicants were selected to attended the event. The second Summit, last year, the cap was raised to 150 (although 151 ended up getting invited), and the number stay the same this year. My guess would be it depends on how much the program grows, as definitely there's a chance (emphasis on the word 'chance', as it's not guaranteed) that the number will be increased again in the future.

Indeed, this event is held once a year, but do not you think for new local guides who are very excited like me and have the potential to help GLG better known, do not get that chance. Hope is gone, even I do not intend anymore to participate in a competition like this next year.

The main reason of the Local Guides program is to help provide and improve high quality information on Google Maps. Something that people use and depend on during their daily lives. Connect Live is only a subset of it, and it's not the one and only thing for new Local Guides to learn. I noticed that you're from Indonesia. I'm actually Indonesian myself and I can help you connect to a few Local Guides community in Indonesia if you're interested. Doing this will expose you more to the Local Guides program and learn about it. 

Don't let this discourage you from applying again next year. Keep in mind there are only 151 out of thousands of applicants that were selected. Not selected doesn't mean Google doesn't care about you, or that you're not a good Local Guide. Don't see getting invited to Connect Live as the end goal of being a Local Guide. There's so much cool things that you can experience by being a Local Guide, aside from getting invited to this yearly event. 

I find out some of the selected participants to view their videos, but in fact some are not announced on some social media and they can be elected.

The only public requirement for applying to Connect Live is to have a posting on Local Guides Connect, as part of your application process. The post can be a new one, or it can be a post written before the application period opened. For video, the applicants just needed to make sure the organizer will be able to view the video. If someone upload their video on YouTube and set it to 'unlisted', only those with the link will be able to see the video. Google also already stated that they will not release the list of selected applicants. This is actually a common practice, as I'm not aware of any other similar events releasing their selected participants for public. Those that are sharing the happy news on social media did voluntarily.

Sadly this means that you were not accepted. Not everyone who applies gets invited. This is no reflection on you or your contributions there are just many many applications and only 150 places.

Confirmation of Visa is a matter of  time to the extent of one month or so depending on the country. 

Some of the selected guys may be having the US visa already and the rest will apply only after receipt of confirmation of Selection for the Summit 2018.

The time for issue of US visa depends on the time factor that varies from country to country - may be difficult for certain countries.

It may be presumed that there may an allowance of up to a month for production of US visa.

So the response by the applicant to this effect (confirmation of visa) may extend over a month or so.

In cases where the visa denial is reported by the applicants, such vacant places may be filled in by the LG's in the Q of next deserving applicant.

The administrators may confirm this presumption.

Thanks for your support. Hope I have to bring to the notice of CEO Google regarding privacy policy adopted in selecting attendees till date reply email I didn't receive from Google. Just to find out my statues of application till date no link is provided to applicants which is authentic regarding list of submitted applications and list of 150 selected attendees how for it is justifiable when the list of selected attendees names are not declared or announced by country wise when all applicants submitted their application .Now I lost confidence in this regard. Whether is it a transparent selection of local guides. There are various methods are adopted to select the attendees to prepare the final list with link. Till date who are Board members in selection committee not known.Best method can be adopted by draw at each level by total number of applications received. Every thing is top confidential is not justified in case of local guides selection .

Hope for a reply email from Google . I worked as Principal and we adopted certain method regarding selection of Students and results are displayed on notice board. 

Here results are confidential regarding selection. 

Let me hope that Google should do justice at least regarding selection of Local guides country wise with transparency in announcing the names of selected local guides.

I want to ask, if some guys don't get the USA visa Will Google extend the invitation to other LGs?

Another thing, Google mentioned that hotel is for 2 people, if the attendee would like to invite someone. Can Google ask who is going alone and if is allowed to accept another local guíde who pay its tickets? I would pay my trip if you extend the invitation to me.

This has to be someone you know though, as Google will not match make you with the participants. However, you will not be allowed to participate in any of the Connect Live activities, as they're only meant for the invited attendees only

Thanks for the info. My wish is been at the event, if not won't be necesary. I am from Dominican Republic a country who Live from turism, my wish is learn how to be a better local guíde to offer a better experience to those who gently visit my country. 

I  That case I would say, in this modern world, where Google lead the technology and join people from around the globe, why Google doesn't give us a link to watch the conferences online to those who coulden't visit?

Please put attention to that, I know won't be difficult for Google and hundred of LGs Will learn how to be better in the community

Transparency is the best way. I do not why they are doing in darkness. If that is the attitude to bring changes in the welfare of the people, how can work for the betterment of the people which Google is trying to achieve.

The method of selection is very vague and confusion. As a matter of fact, it is a complete chaos. The selection lacks transparency.

If this is the way, we can bring to the notice of International Human Rights Commission.

@THOKCHOM The method of selection was pretty clear. If you look at the Connect Live page, you can see the full requirements to apply for the event:

What is your selection criteria?

Applications will be open only to Local Guides Level 5+ during the application period.

Applicants will be selected based on a number of factors including, but not limited to:

• The submission of a complete application with the following requirements:

  • Each Local Guide must submit a 1-minute video message, appearing on camera to share reasons for applying

  • Each Local Guide must submit at least one post on Connect with an introductory message and more insights into their experience with the program

• We’ll also be looking for:

  • High quality, well-rounded and consistent contributions to Google Maps in the past 12 months

  • Consistent involvement with the Local Guides community such as being an active Connect contributor, meet-up host and Connect moderator

  • The ability to understand and speak English

Please understand that there are only 150 spots, and there are thousands of applicants. Just because some people are not selected, that doesn't mean they're not qualified. In reality, there will be a lot more qualified candidates than the available spots for the event.

However, there will be some confidential information shared during the event, which means those sessions can't be streamed live. Although, all the information from the event will be made available for everyone eventually.

I am planning to stream Live 360 videos to cover all the activities (provided they allow me to and if it isnt against their policies).

I am sorry to read your post inviting attention of the intention to    "bring to the notice of International Human Rights Commission (IHRC)" from such an experienced Local Guide like you.

You may perhaps like to read the vision of human Rights Commission in the link  ihrchq.org/vision .... "the highlights are  human rights violations and victimization of groups and individuals, and other matters concerning democracy, politics, extra-judicial killings, honour-killings, child labour and terrorism across the world." 

I am afraid you have not appreciated the limits of IHRC and do not know in what way you can connect the issue with such a strong words referring to IHRC.

You must be well aware that the selected list (unless voluntarily declared by the attendees) will not be released for security reasons.

Security reasons can be anything which might invite controversy in the family, friends, workplace, ...or protest from any other society / anybody defeating the permission of Visa etc.

Exposing the individual name itself is the violation of individual's rights!

When the meet in the event is over or in progress it will become open as to who have attended the meet!

I would request you to be patient till the as regards the selection procedure & not to express your attitude with such reaction please.

I reiterate that the different level of achievement & Connect meet are  the stations in our journey of no destination. 

Those who might have reached the top ost level may find themselves behind you if you are non-stop in your perseverance.

Attitude is more important than the achievement.
