Introduction
It goes without saying that Local Guides in smaller countries or ones where there are significantly less guiding opportunities, such as Barbados, Cameroon and Rwanda, would have less chance of gaining enough points or photo views than those in larger countries such as the United States, Canada or the UK and therefore, these Local Guides have less chance of getting onto leaderboards based strictly on points or views!
Local Heroes > Local Stories
The leaderboards in this post, are different because they specifically take into account the country location of the participating Local Guides and in this way, they give Local Guides from even the smallest countries, recognition and an opportunity to be featured as local heroes in their country, and you will see many are.
The Cover Photo
The Leaderboards series exists to celebrate, analyze, and inspire the incredible contributions of Local Guides worldwide. Because this series is all about our community, when possible, each cover features photos of, and taken by, our fellow members.
This monthβs Country Leaderboard post features a historic shot of Burg Neuhaus (Castel Casanova) near Gais in Alto Adige, Italy, captured in 1978 by Level 10 Local Guide @WilfriedB.
Regularly commuting between MΓΆnchengladbach, Germany and the scenic hills of Spoleto, Italy, Wilfried is a true digital archivist who treats his Google Maps contributions like a personal diary. A former IT specialist, he approaches mapping with engineering precisionβa passion he has pursued from the early days of Panoramio and Picasa right through to his Level 10 status today.
Captured nearly five decades ago, this photograph highlights the unique power of long-term visual archiving on Maps. Tucked against the dense alpine forests of South Tyrol, Burg Neuhaus stands as a timeless piece of historyβmade all the more special because Wilfried has been documenting our changing world for over 50 years, and heβs still just getting started.
