Introduction:
Welcome back to the Top 100 Local Guides Spotlight! This month, we are shining the light on a true community titan from Auckland, New Zealand. Dennis (better known to the Connect community as DshottDennis) isn’t just a Level 10 guide; he’s a creative force of nature.
A Radio DJ, photographer, and mental health advocate, Dennis’s journey into the world of Local Guides started not just as a hobby, but as a path to wellness. He’s the guy who goes “undercover” to capture the perfect shot and spends his mornings ensuring that when you search for a local business, the info is 100% spot-on. With a heritage rooted in the beautiful island of Niue and a family tree that is—quite literally—a small army, Dennis brings a unique, vibrant energy to everything he touches.
Let’s dive into the world of our favorite “Digital Navigator” from the South Pacific!
The Spotlight Interview: DshottDennis
1. Where on Earth do you call home?
I call Auckland, New Zealand, my home. It’s famously known as the “City of Sails,” a place where the harbor is always full of life. It’s a city steeped in rich Polynesian culture, and there’s nothing quite like the power and spirit of a Maori Haka to make you feel where you are.
2. What do you do when you’re not rocking the Local Guides world?
I wear a few different hats! I’m a passionate advocate for mental health awareness, and I use my platforms to promote well-being. I’m also an online entertainer and Radio DJ, as well as a creative photographer. I love utilizing my visual and digital skills on social media to spark positive conversations and showcase the beauty in the world.

3. How and when did you dive into the Local Guides adventure?
My journey began at the end of 2017. My doctor told me I needed more exercise to help manage a mental health disorder, so I decided to start walking. But I needed a “why.”
I knew Google was the future, and I wanted to be part of it. I realized that the community needed photos to truly see the places they were searching for. I had an “Aha!” moment: I could walk, improve my health, take photos, and earn points (and maybe those legendary Google socks!). The rest, as they say, is history.
4. What gets you fired up about being a Local Guide?
I love being an ambassador for the program. Whether it’s family, friends, or even a stranger on the street, I get fired up explaining how a Local Guide’s review can help someone buy their next car, pick the perfect holiday hotel, or find the best local discounts. It’s about empowering people with information.

5. Is there a special meaning behind your Connect username?
“Dshott” represents my dual talents in deejaying and photography—it’s all about getting that perfect “shot,” whether it’s a track or a photo. “Dennis” actually got added by accident when I was setting it up, but I liked the ring of DshottDennis, so I let it stand!
6. What’s your absolute favorite type of contribution, and why does it rock?
Editing. Nothing is more frustrating than driving to a store only to find the hours are wrong or the location is off. I get a huge sense of personal satisfaction knowing that by updating a POI (Point of Interest), I might have saved an entire community from “standing outside the store fuming” because of incorrect info. It’s about saving people’s precious time.
7. Which is your favorite all-time contribution, and why?
It has to be photography! I’ll let you in on a secret: I enjoy pretending to be a secret agent on an undercover mission. I try to go into “stealth mode” to get the most natural shots, though it doesn’t always work!
When people do notice and ask what I’m doing, I proudly explain the Local Guides mission. I love seeing their faces light up when they realize how much work goes into making Maps so helpful for everyone.
8. Spill the beans! What gear do you use to create your amazing contributions?
I’m a mobile-first guy because it fits in my pocket and is always ready for action. I started with a Samsung S22 Ultra, but I’ve since converted to the Google Pixel family. The specs are incredible and it’s so user-friendly. Currently, I’m rocking the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL.
9. What do you like most about the Local Guides Community, Connect?
I am of Niuean ethnicity—both of my parents are from that beautiful island—and being born in New Zealand, I feel blessed to live in such a diverse “melting pot.” Connect is that diversity on a global scale. I love that if I traveled anywhere tomorrow, I could reach out to a Local Guide there to find the coolest hidden spots and best food.
10. Which Top 100 Leaderboards do you like most?
I always head straight for the Photo Views leaderboard every month. I just marvel at the thought of millions of people viewing my photos to help them make a decision. The evolution of the leaderboards has been so innovative—I’m just glad to be part of such an engaging community.
11. What is your favorite holiday destination?
Niue. I first visited the home of my forefathers a decade ago and my only regret is not going sooner. It’s a magical place where you can swim with dolphins, snorkel with stunning tropical fish, and watch whales just meters off the coast.
Plus, Niue is the world’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary. The stars are unbelievable, and it’s amazing to think about how early travelers used that same star system to navigate the Pacific. My dream is to map the entire island and leave a legacy as a “South Pacific Digital Navigator.”
12. What destination would you love to visit one day?
Every country has its own untold story, and I’d love to see them all. But if I had to pick one next, it would be North America.
13. What’s a super fun fact about you that might surprise us?
I was an only child, but I’ve certainly made up for it! My wife and I have 7 children (6 girls and 1 boy) and we currently have 17 grandchildren (14 boys and 3 girls). Our family gatherings are never quiet!
Conclusion
Talk about a life well-lived! Dennis is the perfect example of how being a Local Guide can be more than just a hobby—it can be a tool for health, a way to connect with your heritage, and a platform to help others. From the “stealth mode” photography to his dream of mapping Niue for future generations, his passion is infectious.
And with that, we wrap up another fantastic Spotlight! We’re already looking ahead to who will be next to step into the frame. Which Top 100 legend will we feature in Spotlight #10? You’ll have to stay tuned to find out! Until then, keep your edits sharp, your photos “stealthy,” and keep being the amazing guides you are!
