Introduction:

This post is all about the photos contributed to Google Maps by Local Guides from all over the world. More specifically, it’s about the views that these photos rack up. It consists of a series of leaderboards showcasing the view counts of these photos. There’s a leaderboard for each Local Guide level and in this way you don’t have to be a “top gun” level 10 Local Guide with a mega million views to be featured on the Leaderboards! Whether you’re an entry level Local Guide or from a small country, town or village, or a top level Local Guide from London, New Delhi or New York, you can join in and it’s simple to do! If you want to jump on board, hit this link or just mention this in a comment in this post.

Why are photo views important?

We all know that as Local Guides we don’t get points for the views that our contributions generate! However, views are important as they give us a pretty good indication on how we are impacting on our communities at the Local Guide level. For example, they give us a good indication on how many people we have helped make a decision such as what place to visit or what meal to have. So while we don’t get points for photo views, we certainly get an awesome feeling when we see that our photos are being viewed by lots of people and being visible across Google services, like Search, means that our photo view counts can increase significantly and you will see on the Leaderboards in this post, how significant this can be.

Is this just a competition?

While there is an inherent competitive element within them, the Leaderboards are more than just about seeing who has the “best” photos or the most photo views, far from it! They have been specifically designed to motivate us, help us to monitor our contributions and performance, and show us how to improve and make better contributions so that we achieve better results, and all in a fun and enjoyable way! So do join in.

The photo in the cover image was taken by @Trail_blazer (DK), a level 10 Local Guide from Faridabad, India. It shows him sitting on the steps of the Palyul Namdroling Bodhgaya Buddhist temple with a group of Monks and was taken by his friend during his visit to Gaya, a holy city beside the Falgu River, in the northeast Indian state of Bihar when he and a friend explored the holy land of Lord Gautam Buddha.

DK described Gaya as “a wonderful place to visit, with monasteries representing dozens of East Asian countries. I took a few pictures with some monks, who later invited me to their place. To my surprise, they were quite tech-savvy, using laptops and cellphones. They even asked me to share some of the great shots I had taken there.”

As Local Guides we each know the best places to visit and the photos to take in our respective locations and it is for this reason that I love featuring great photos taken by Local Guides from all over the world, and this one taken by DK is yet another great example of this. What do you think?

Readme - How to Read the Photo Views leaderboards (October, 2024)

Briefly, this is what you need to know about the leaderboards in this post. For more details see the leaderboard documentation and the Leaderboard System’s online context-sensitive help information.

1. The leaderboards in this post present details about the photo views of hundreds of participating Local Guides from all over the world. As well as an overall leaderboard ranking the top 100 Local Guides by photo views, you will see leaderboards for different Local Guide levels which provide you with direct comparisons of your photo views achievements with that of your peers.

   There’s also a leaderboard, referred to as the Exclusive Billion Photo Views Club that highlights those heavy hitting, high views Local Guide achievers.

   Finally, there’s a leaderboard that shows the top 100 Local Guides ranked by the Average Views/Photo which gives a good indication of the overall “quality” of all photos taken by each Local Guide. This is simply calculated by dividing the Local Guide’s total photo views value by the number of publicly visible contributed photos. Of course the use of the term “quality” here refers to the attractiveness of the photos to the Google AI and the viewing public.

2. Where shown, [ ] around leaderboard sequence numbers indicate that this is the first time that the Local Guide has participated on the Top 100 Local Guides leaderboards.

3. Where shown, ( ) around leaderboard sequence numbers indicate that this Local Guide levelled up/down onto this leaderboard.

4. An asterisk (*) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Connect Moderator.

5. Double asterisks (**) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Googler.

6. Hovering over a Local Guide’s username will display the integration number that integrates that Local Guide’s details on the Leaderboards System and Connect; the umbilical chord if you will between the two disparate systems.

7. Selecting a Connect Usernames will take you to that Local Guide’s Connect Profile.

8. A [0] superscript following a Local Guide’s username indicates that the photo views of the respective Local Guide are most likely overstated and should be read with caution as this Local Guide has not added the Impact value of their videos contributed to Maps. In these cases the views value is also shown on a background color.
   Update::To provide a level playing field, while being included in the Top 100 Media leaderboard, Local Guides that should but don’t provide/update their video impact data will be excluded from all photo views leaderboards.

9. Local Guides suspended or who have left the Local Guides program as well as those who have hidden their Maps profile are excluded from the Photo Views Leaderboards.

10. A ? or the words “Not set” in a cell indicates that the respective value hasn’t been provided by or cannot be determined for the respective Local Guide.

11. The data for the leaderboards in this post was read at 1140 on Saturday, November 16, 2024 (UTC).

12. If you’re a participating Local Guide you must check the leaderboards for any errors or omissions and if you find any, then please add the details in a comment on this post. Regarding omissions, please note point 10 above.

Well done everyone who has improved on their views and congratulations to @bkobog, @Gopinallaiyan, @tamilisa, @Getzafar, @KingNamoonga, @Natasha_C and @suvankar_paul14 who climbed up the Local Guide levels and also for making it onto the next higher up leaderboard which is not always assured.

A special mention to both @MelTG and @Mikeinthefalls who continue to impress with amazing average views per media and average views per photo stats.

Here’s a question for everyone!
If you look closely you will see that @Jagannath098, a newcomer to the Photo Views Leaderboards, has made it onto the average views per photo board, but doesn’t appear on his respective Local Guide level leaderboard. How can this be so

Thanks @AdamGT for featuring the photo. Looks like shifting of LBs to new connect has been quite a tough task. Tables still look a WIP as the old links are appearing in different line unlike old connect where they were in just one line and sequence. Hope things get better, as more and more people are joining in. Most welcome to new comers

Migrating the Leaderboards to the new Connect has certainly thrown up some challenges and it ain’t over yet. Yes the links to the historical leaderboards need correcting and you may have also noticed the erroneous zero superscript against Local Guide names. However, having said that, having now posted two of the 8 sets of Leaderboards, I’m quietly confident that things will get better but I have to say that the real challenge will be the Country Leaderboards.
