Tips for Making a Great List

Google Maps is such an awesome product whether it’s navigating you from A to B, exploring your area or helping you get things done! And one of the often overlooked feature of Google Maps is saving your favourite places into lists! It is so simple to do, so incredibly useful and I hope this post will help you give it a try and create some truly awesome lists not just for yourself but to share to the public too!

By default, every Google Map user will have three list already available to you; Favourites, Want to go and Starred places. Your interpretation may differ but I see the priority of the lists as Favourites > Starred places > Want to go.

  • Want to go – Places that I have not been to but sounds interesting enough for me to want to save them for future explorations
  • Starred places – Places that I have been to that I have had a really good time/experience and would be more than likely to return or recommend
  • Favourites – Similar to Starred places but these are soooo good, I keep going back to them and are usually my all-time best venues

Besides these three lists, you can also create new ones, customise them to your own themes and either keep them private for your own use or share them to the public.

Top reasons to make a list:

  • It’s a great way to keep a tab of all the amazing places that you’ve been to and to help you find them again in the future.
  • It’s super easy to share them with friends and family as a list of recommended places; still be a local guide for when you don’t have the time to show them around.
  • It helps you plan ahead when you’re travelling to a new location by marking out venues that you would want to visit. Then, by having visual markers on the map, you can group places together and create an efficient route to visit them all!
  • It help others (public) discover the hidden gems, top places and memorable spots of your neighbourhood/city!

How to make a list:

There are numerous posts out there that cover this section so I’ll just link to them. They are all super amazing, so do check them out.

Tips:

Like all things related to this program, it’s always about the quality. So take your time to make a proper consideration of the type of lists that you’re making and which businesses do you add to it! Here are some quick tips!

  • Remember to give your list a descriptive but short title. If you’re making the list public, you may want to make it catchy but always remember to keep it descriptive so that folks can immediately see what the list is for.
  • Keep your list short (minimum of 5 locations). For example, if you’re making a list of Top Cafés, you shouldn’t be listing every single café in your area since that is no different to doing a search on Maps. Be selective of who you add to your list.
  • Consider your catchment area: are you making a list for your neighbourhood, your city, your country, the world(!)? Which is the most helpful for a visitor that is coming to visit you?
  • Consider who your target audience is: will this list be useful for tourists, parents, folks on a tight budget, foodies with extra cash to burn etc?
  • Consider themes for your list: for example, rather than Top Cafés in Manchester, it could be Top Cafés for Foam Art. This helps to narrow down the focus and also give your list a unique spin!
  • Provide extra information to the places you’ve added into your list; explain why you’ve included them in your list, perhaps provide further tips and recommendations. Your local knowledge on what’s best can be utterly helpful and insightful!

  • Be transparent: I like to make a list based on places that I’ve actually been to and experienced but that limits the number of places that I can actually recommend. So I started tinkering around with adding places that I have heard is great although I’ve not been there myself. However, I do make sure that the majority of the items in my list are of places that I have visited. And to be super transparent of my selection, I now put a disclaimer indicating which places that I’ve actually been to!
  • Research!! If you’re going to add places that you’ve not been to but heard it’s really great, make sure your information is valid and sound

When I started to make my own lists of places, the first thing I did was open up the map of my city, scanned through the whole city and picked out all the places that I’ve been to and would highly recommend. Then with this big list of places, I started to group them into smaller lists that was thematic. And locally, we have a Manchester Food and Drinks Festival Awards, so I checked their list of nominated places and add any that I think would be relevant. I am still in the process of fine-tuning the various lists (it’s taking foreeeevvveeerrr!!) but once I have them done, I’ll share the links. So far my lists include:

And if you’re looking for more examples, check out this list (of lists!) that KatieMcB has put together.

Do you have your own tips that I’ve not mentioned above that you would love to share? Or maybe you have a great list of your own that you would think would make a great example! Do write in the comments below and share, share, share!

**Out of curiosity, do you make lists of ONLY places that you’ve been to? What are your thoughts on including places that you have NOT been to?**I’d love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments below too! :kissing_heart:

Hi @AdrianLunsong ,

Your post is much appreciated and relevant since I spend today trying to prepare some better lists.

I’m working on a list of Where to take your kids in Copenhagen. The theme will be Royal fun for kids and fairytale places to explore with your 4-7-year-old kids. But it is not quite ready yet. I still have a few things to research. I will share it when ready.

But I did finish two shorter lists:

https://maps.app.goo.gl/E6DyxBDUZKDoCLAu6

This is about the 7 places in Copenhagen where you can climb up inside a tower to enjoy the magnificent views of city rooftops and surroundings. I added opening hours, entrance fees and how high up you will get. All for easy reference. I did two versions one in Danish and this one in English. The places are ordered after descending height. (Hmmm. The order and pictures selected on Android are not visible on Desktop!)

This other one is about the secret days when a few museums allow visitors in for free.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/BSG6jd4WKECSpGq78

This information is for good reasons almost not advertised publicly. So the target group would be folks on a tight budget.

I have been to all the places except for one tower. But I will visit soon and edit the information if needed.

So I agree we should ideally only share places that we have visited.

I needed to get some details confirmed earlier today by reaching out to the places, but they all responded almost immediately. Very nice.

Comments on my new lists are super welcome.

I was hoping they could be promoted on Google Maps for visitors to find. Do you know how lists get selected?

Many such already promoted lists do not even have notes attached to each place.

Cheers and thanks.

Handy tips, @AdrianLunsong . It will help a lot at this moment that a lot of Local Guides are preparing their applications to CL2020. I’ll make sure to check it in detail when I’ll prepare my next lists. Thank you for sharing!

Great and detailed post @AdrianLunsong

Absolutely helpful, not only for a list to submit for Connect Live, but for every list you want to publicly share on Google Maps

Well done

This is a good tips you’ve shared, @AdrianLunsong

For me, I usually create a list to plan my trip. I make a research which places along the way or which places in the city that I’m going to travel to that I want (or sometimes I must) visit.

For example I’ve made a list about where’s the gas station (and rest area) that maybe I need to stop by along the Java Toll Road from Surabaya, East Java, to Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia.

By doing this, I hope could plan my future trip better. Hehee…

@MortenCopenhagen Thanks and I’m excited for your lists; they sound really interesting and fun! I’m also trying to think of different themes that would suit families but it’s really hard because I rarely pay attention to the important factors that families would be interested in. Going forward though, I’m trying my best to open my eyes and pay attention to other things outside my own areas of interest.

Out of curiosity, what is your ‘checklist’ as a parent of young kids? I can think of the following but not sure if they are actually relevant (I don’t have kids or hang around with families that have kids):

  • Food - smaller portions
  • Food - kids menu i.e. dishes tailored to kids
  • Activities - play zones for kids
  • Activities - activities targeted for kids of different age groups
  • Environment - safe for kids e.g. gated areas so they can’t wander around
  • Environment - loud noises are tolerated so great for kids

The details in your two lists are great too; straight to the point! And I can see why you were asking about formatting in lists! The two lists that I created last year have too much in the description. Unfortunately, being concise is one of my major weaknesses!

And I have no clue how lists are being selected as well. The ones that I see locally are usually promoted articles from local news sites and the majority of actual lists are created by Google with the odd one or two from Local Guides. Like yourself, I’m hoping my lists will get promoted so fingers crossed!

@AlexandreCampbell Thanks for your kind words! And yes, do share your lists when you are ready! It’ll be interesting to see all the various lists that people can come up with!

@ErmesT Thanks! I tried to write it in a more general sense and not specifically targeted for Connect Live! You know what they say, a list is not just for Connect Live!

@LuigiZ Hehehe… thanks! You can add it to your list of posts to share to new folks perhaps … :joy:

@iorikun301 That’s a great way to use lists! I have quite a few private lists too that I use for planning out my travels! I’m in the midst of creating one for my travel plans in Europe! So that should be quite interesting. I’m also trying to ‘future proof’ it so that I can easily convert that private list into multiple public lists. It’s something that I will write about in a future post. I just need to create an example of it first and try it out to understand the pros and cons. So stay tune!

Hi @AdrianLunsong

My main criteria for selecting places is that my three daughters loved the place when they were young. And I try to look for places that will fascinate kids and bring them joy preferably while being active together with their grown-ups.

To get some feedback from parents I’m considering adding an email to the end of each list description. In the long run, this could lead to better lists.

I wish we could get some info on how lists get selected. Maybe @MortenSI would know who can help us out. Also, I would like to know how to reach those responsible for the lists prepared by Google and the lists for districts in a city could use some feedback.

Cheers

Hi @AdrianLunsong

As mentioned I have been working on a list called Royal fun for kids visiting or living in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Here is the list for your inspiration and critique:

Nice one @MortenCopenhagen !! Good details on the activities and cost which I’m sure parents all over would appreciate!

A few questions:

  • What sort of feedback/comments are you looking for from folks who view your list?
  • Have you tried editing your list on mobile? They have additional features that unfortunately don’t transfer across to the desktop experience such as customised order and selected photos for each venue. If you share the link and view on mobile, it’s fine but when viewing on desktop the custom order and photo selection goes away. As far as I can tell, the order in the list is random; it’s not alphabetical and it’s also not in the order that the venues are added.
  • Do you have any additional tips for folks creating lists?

@AdrianLunsong I have created some lists for my personal use. So there is no description of the lists or description of each places. I thought this is nice until it annoyed me that Google Maps asked me to publish the lists from time to time, then I deleted all the lists. I wish we can set the lists to be private, so there is no annoying question like that. Have you ever faced this problem?

Hi @AdrianLunsong ,

I’m hoping for feedback that I can use to improve the texts on the list.

Is the link different depending on where I copy the link from. I don’t think so.

I agree it’s sad that the order and selected pics are unstable over platforms.

A new tip would be how to manage the order on desktop. I suspect it is not completely random. I think we might be able to manipulate the order by making edits to the place notes in a select order. But I need to do some more testing to be completely sure.

Cheers

Hi @AdrianLunsong

I have an update and a new tip.

Trying to fix the sorting order on desktop by editing the notes in a select order does not seem feasible. They jump to the top sometimes and not always to the very top. Seems inconsistent.

The new tip is relevant if you have longer notes. On Desktop and Android it is almost impossible to edit slightly longer texts because the text is shown in a field only two lines high. But on IOS (iPad) all the lines are visible. That makes editing a lot easier.

Cheers

@Ant_Bad_Yogi I am so with you on that one too! I have a number of personal lists too and so far, I’ve cleared those that have served their purposes and kept a few that I could still make use of. But yeah, the prod to publish them is annoying! And I don’t know if you have experienced it but when I set my personal list to “Hide from map”, they usually reappear after a few days… like the user setting is lost.

Thanks for the research and the new tip @MortenCopenhagen ! Much appreciated!

@AdrianLunsong Oh I see. You also found the same thing.

For the second issue, I had the same. But since I deleted all the lists, the issue is gone. Hahaha.

Thank you for sharing your tips for making a Great List with us. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @AdrianLunsong

Thank you for this great post.
I few list created on Google Maps. I can see that you post describe the spirit behind the creation of my list. But I did not add a lot of description  I will take time for that

See for example this one on attractive places for kids in Douala

Great informative article!

I have a similar style when making lists:

Places I’ve been and want to go again or keep for reference

Places I would recommend others to go

Places I want to go and check out (in future or for a specific date)

But the thing which I really took from your article was about the titles… they each make sense to me, but would a stranger easily be able to understand what the list is about?

I’ve now been inspired to go through and update all my lists today! Thanks so much!
