Supporting Women-Owned Businesses: Handicrafts on the Streets of Kalyan

Hey Local Guides :folded_hands:,

Here’s another amazing business lane run by women entrepreneurs, inspired by @Globe_trotter_Ish 's Lets empower women owned businesses on google maps and @AjitThite 's Dil Se Local Challenge

While attending a play at Acharya Atre Rangamandir, Kalyan, I stumbled upon a vibrant roadside market filled with beautifully handcrafted baskets, earthen pot coolers, and Rukhwat (traditional decorative wedding gifts). What made it even more special? These businesses are run by talented women who pour their creativity into every piece they make!

They offer handwoven baskets in both natural and colored styles, with or without stands, starting from ₹120. In Maharashtrian traditions, the bride’s family gifts handmade items called Rukhwat to the newlyweds. The women here craft different Rukhwat items, including bullock carts, Tulsi Vrindavan, decorated coconuts, torans, and Kaltyar, with prices starting from ₹60.

They also sell beautifully decorated, traditional earthen pot coolers at affordable prices. These coolers naturally keep drinking water fresh, making them perfect for summer! Additionally, you’ll find gullak (money bank pots) and other creative clay kitchenware.

While heading home, after the play, my mom purchased a basket and an earthen pot from this market. This lane is active from 10 AM to 10 PM, with around five shops specializing in baskets and earthen pot coolers. It is located to the right of Acharya Atre Rangamandir which is on walkable distance from Kalyan railway Station West.

It’s always inspiring to see such artistry and dedication. In a world dominated by mass production, witnessing authentic craftsmanship still thriving is truly heartwarming. If you ever find yourself in Kalyan, take a moment to explore this hidden gem, support these talented women, and bring home a piece of their creativity!
