Supporting Unorganised Businesses

In several of my posts (Chai Pe Charcha 1, Chai Pe Charcha 2, Chai Pe Charcha 3, Chai Pe Charcha 4), I have highlighted and supported unorganised businesses under the category of micro-businesses. However, today, I would like to shed some light specifically on the broader concept of unorganised businesses and their impact.

Unorganized businesses in India are businesses that operate outside of the formal regulatory framework and are not registered with the government. They are also known as the informal sector or the household sector. Unorganised businesses play a crucial role in any country’s economy, especially in developing nations. In India, this sector significantly contributes to both employment and production. The unorganised sector accounts for nearly 50% of India’s GDP.Around 80-90% of the total workforce is engaged in unorganised businesses.

Examples of unorganized businesses

  • Street food vendors
  • Kirana store owners
  • Household workers
  • Delivery persons
  • Drivers
  • Electronic waste collectors
  • Rag pickers
  • Construction workers
