Azad Restaurant started their span of business in 1940 at Thiruvananthapuram serving “Desi” deliciousness foods & drinks. It was originally started as a cafe at Vallakadavu which was famous for biryani. As they started in 1940, they witnessed revolutionary movements & continue to provide tasty & delicious biryani to their customers. Trivandrumite can’t forget them as they provides hot & tasty biryani at 2am in the morning even.
1940 by Azad is situated at Vazhuthacaud, an hotspot for Desi cafes & coffee shops. The restaurant serves Asian & Indian dishes with particular Travancore (Trivandrum) foods also.
I ordered a Bombay Sandwich & a regular . Sandwich was delicious with eco friendly paper wrapping used for it. They also uses paper cups for dining in & takeaways which ready their way for sustainable restaurant.
Even though they don’t have gender neutral bathrooms or Unisex bathrooms, they inclusively welcome all customers as I was comfortable in their interior & customer friendly ambience.
They also not wheelchair accessible but will be in near future as in adding different wheelchair entrance (as told by the staff).
Last week when i was passing through the road i saw this outlet of azad and i noticed it because of the new appearance as it is different from all other azad restaurants.Thank you for sharing @Rahul001
This is amazing to me…I thought Trivandrum is majorly cater “Coffee” and not Tea…
Is this ‘Azad’ the builder group or local brand?
Thanks for sharing these details…
Thank you @TravellerG for your valuable comment and words .
True indeed as we get hot coffee in steal cups. But we can see sudden rise of small tea Businesses and tea stalls in streets. 50% of them are night openers.
I think Azad is not builders group or local brand. They have outlets, mainly in Trivandrum, kollam and outside of India. Not only resti, they ventured out to tea shop, bakery & even hotels.

I especially love how you highlight accessibility features and eco‑friendly practices alongside inclusivity. It shows the holistic impact of these local guides efforts - and definitely inspires me to explore and support these spaces in my area.
It’s inspiring to see how 1940 by Azad blends rich heritage with a modern, inclusive spirit. The fact that they’ve sustained their legacy from a small café in 1940 to a proudly welcoming space today really speaks volumes. I especially loved your note about the sustainable packaging — it’s great when tradition meets conscious innovation.
The Bombay Sandwich and chai combo looks so comforting, and the eco-friendly approach just adds to the overall charm. Kudos to the staff for planning accessibility improvements and for creating a space where all customers feel at ease.
