Review not posted due to content policies

I’ve noticed two brand new (short) reviews have been flagged for content policy violations with a request to log an appeal if I think it’s a mistake. This is often just not worth the effort of doing. Can anyone logically explain why it makes any sense to flag these reviews?

On clicking the appeal button apparently I’m doing fake engagement, there is geo tagged photos I have submitted with the review. This is a sad reflection that after several hundred reviews with no issues I’m now getting reviews flagged.

Hi @diwanow , welcome back in Connect

The reason can be found in An update on how we moderate Google Maps reviews .

The scope of this new notification, that started to roll out recently all over the world after a long test in France, is to make the users aware of the rejected reviews, giving them on the same time the possibility to appeal, for an operator to check what has been flagged by the AI.

In this way Google can balance between a stronger filter (that will avoid a lot of spam) and the release of what incorrectly filtered.

In fact after that message you wrote quickly here, while I haven’t seen any post by you about your other 75 Hidden reviews. Are you aware of them?

In any case you can appeal for them too, by filling out the form shared in the same post mentioned above.

Please keep in mind that the check may take several weeks (7 to 8 in my case) and all the reviews that are not against the policies will be released

Hello everyone, I’m a level 7 Local Guide with almost 700 reviews and lots of other added/answered stuff.

Lately I have noticed that none of my new reviews are posted. They are automatically flagged as “not following the content policy”. I did appeal every single one of them and after moderator review they are posted.

Not sure why did this happen, as the way I write reviews did not change. Is this some kind of a new policy they are trying? Or is this just me not getting along with the AI moderator? Has anyone experienced something like this before?

Hi @Tomatas

Kindly share a screenshot showing the message about a review not following the guidelines.

I looked at your public reviews and most look fine. But please always consider the helpfulness for other Maps users.

I doubt the above two reviews of yours will be found very helpful. Would you read them and think: Wow, that is helpful to me?

Read about typical review guideline violations here. And please see my latest post called 4 Tips on writing better reviews.

Cheers

Hallo @Tomatas , welcome to Connect.

I am happy that your reviews were posted, after the check from the operator.

As the same question was asked, and answered, just yesterday, I am merging your post in there for you to check the reply.

You also have other 30 hidden reviews. For them the suggestion is the same that you can read above: by filling out the form shared in the same post mentioned above

Hello,
I joined the Local Guide project a few years ago. Since then I have been posting reviews and photos from many different places. In the reviews I have learned to include historical information of the place, a personal impression of the place, a view of the surroundings of the place and a note of nearby interesting objects (if there is something of interest).

I was very surprised to find that a large number of reviews were not published, or were being “published”. I therefore tried to search for a solution on the internet (without success). It was only this evening, i.e. this morning, that I discovered this thread on the forum. I decided to share this experience with others.

I have read the community guidelines (it was not a short read), but I still think that my review meets these guidelines. I admit that there are a few places where I’m not sure. For example, the statues near the Wallenstein Garden in Prague - the statues have the same artist, were created in the same year, and are copies of 18th century statues (the originals are in the Valeč Castle). Since all these features are common to all 6 sculptures, my reviews are the same. On the other hand, after reading the review, visitors to the site will learn something more and understand that these statues “belong together”. I might, really just might, be violating those principles here, but are there really dozens/hundreds of other reviews violating them? I’m willing to rework reviews from the sites I’ve visited to better suit the community, but with this experience I’m not sure how to do that.

I have already filed so-called appeals against some of the decisions. I’ve also filled out the attached form (here on the forum). However, there are still dozens of reviews left that are “disliked” and I’m not sure why that is. Can a moderator (“approver”) advise me on a few specific examples of my reviews, what the Google Maps algorithm doesn’t like about the reviews and why all this is happening? I’m not angry, I just found the rejection of reviews surprising and odd. I currently have photos from over 20 other places I have visited (last 14 days of travel). I’m a bit worried about what this will entail - write a review, post it, wait a while, file an appeal, think what went wrong this time.

I have been visiting interesting places in the Czech Republic (I live here) for several years, and occasionally other countries. I travel with a heavy DSLR, sometimes with a tablet. I take photos and videos from places. For ultra-wide angle photos and videos I borrow my brother’s mobile phone. When I return home afterwards, I write reviews of the places I visited and add photos and videos. The tablet does not have internet access (only Wi-Fi). Hi @Aphrael , welcome to Connect. You are in the right thread, and you can find an explanation in this reply.

Following the steps illustrated in there you will be able to ask for a check of your reviews

Hi @Aphrael

4 years back I was struggling to keep some sculpture reviews public. The same artist made them and I repeated one sentence across all 4 sculptures. That was enough to trigger the spam filter. So, you sharing the same review text at more than one pin (because you think it makes sense) can easily cause them to be hidden.

All the best

Morten

Hello Google champions, How does it really work? Why adding pictures results in marking my review as fake engagement? I am really disappointed.

Did you try the appeal offered in the App? If not, please do so.

What made you think your photos are the culprit?

Salve caro amico local guide

Tranquillo sta succedendo a parecchie persone pure a me. Fai il ricorso come dice giustamente @MortenCopenhagen e vedi che te l’aprovano quasi sempre. Sicuramente avranno qualche problema nella gestione delle recensioni spero che risolveranno al più presto.

Buona vita!

Hi @I-am-Q . This is quite easy to explain: adding a photo to a review is exactly like to make an edit of the review. When you post it, the review is checked again by the filter, even if it was visible previously, with more than 4000 views and a couple of likes.

The new filter is much stronger than the previous one, as you can read

in An update on how we moderate Google Maps reviews .

What you probably don’t know is that in total you have 188 hidden reviews.

In any case you can appeal for them too, by filling out the form shared in the same post mentioned above.

As the same question was asked, and answered already, to keep Connect organised I am merging your post in there for you to check the reply.

Hi @MortenCopenhagen

I don’t think that my pictures are culprits, I am just so upset with the unpleased way of handling reviews. A warning or a sign would have been very helpful when a guide start to edit one of own reviews.

You see, many of my reviews are flagged as fake review. I flagged earlier about not being able to see ”Are you here”, and I get the impression that this might be because of that.

Hi @ErmesT

How can I copy my profile url?

Should i fill the form for each one of my reviews?

@I-am-Q

This is your maps profile link: https://www.google.com/maps/contrib/116716439397231022285

Not seeing Are you here is not likely to be causing your reviews be hidden.

Google is currently rolling out a new system to make users aware of which of there reviews are currently hidden.

Using the form should be done for your profile and not the individual reviews.

You can copy the URL of your profile directly from your profile in Connect, @I-am-Q

The URL of your profile in Maps is https://www.google.com/maps/contrib/116716439397231022285.

You need to fill the form only once, for the team to check the whole profile.

Please keep in mind that the check may take several weeks. Last time that I submitted the form (moderators are affected by this issue too) the reviews were republished it 7-8 weeks

**Thanks @MortenCopenhagen **

Is it so that all posts that have been tagged with “Review not posted”, will be affected or should I appeal for each one?

Oh by the way @ErmesT

My timeline doesn’t works either… just in case
