Introduction:
You may be familiar with the official Scavenger Hunt event organised by the Local Guides team. Well, this is the unofficial virtual version of the game!! Towards the end of 2025, I realised that many folks could not play the game because they couldn’t find enough players in their local area so I thought of this virtual version to allow more folks to give it a try! It’s probably half the fun of an in-person scavenger hunt but it’s still chaotic and I tried my best to keep it as true to the original game but more virtual friendly! ![]()
Game Rules:
-
In this virtual version, the challenges have been modified to make them virtual friendly. Most of them are true to the original challenges with maybe 1-2 challenges modified quite a bit!
-
I will be restricting our game play to just 1 hour long. On average, I think that most in-person scavenger hunts take 2-4 hours to complete but we will stop at 1 hour to record our scores (number of challenges completed and total points scored) and we might keep on playing if the team is happy to do so.
-
We will be attempting the challenges in the order that they are presented and the team won’t be allowed to skip any. Reason: To keep the game more organised and structured
-
One person is assigned as the Team Tracker. This person is responsible for recording all the places that the team have visited during the Scavenger Hunt into a Google Maps shared list. Reason: To keep the game more organised and structured
-
One person is assigned as the Team Photographer. This person is responsible for taking the team photos/videos to submit them inside the Let’s Roam app to complete the challenges. Reason: To keep the game more organised and structured
-
The modified challenges are divided into three categories: Quiz, Group and Solo.
For the Quiz category, everyone can participate but one team member will submit the answer for the team.
For the Group category, everyone in the team will participate.
For the Solo category, one person in the team is chosen to attempt the challenge.
Reason for Solo category: if all the challenges were Group based, then it’s usually the fastest player to answer that will get the spotlight. So, to ensure that every player gets the chance to play and provide the answer to the challenge, the Solo category was needed. -
The chosen player will not be allowed to attempt another solo challenge until everyone in the team has had a turn. The nature of the challenge is only revealed once the player has been chosen! Whilst that player is attempting the solo challenge, their team mates can provide assistance. And if the challenge is too difficult, the player is allowed to pass it to anyone in the team. This second attempt is not factored in for the player selection. Reason: To introduce an element of surprise
-
Players will be using Google Maps and/or Streetview to complete their challenges and they will be sharing their browser tab so that we can all follow along.
-
Each player has chosen a unique city as their game area. Reason: To keep the game more exciting! Also, players can explore and learn more about each other’s cities too. Restricting the game area makes it more challenging and players need to be familiar with their own chosen area.
Summary of the meet-up:
Another day, another virtual meet-up full of chaos!
Huge applause to team APAC Predators!!! From a lost voice to poor internet connection to joining in on a mobile… we certainly had a lot of fun overcoming the various challenges!
For this second team, I was a little bit more prepared so I decided that I would help to submit the answers to the quiz and also to help take the photos! The reason for this is that I wanted the players to just focus on the Meet call and not look at the phone too much. Also, when taking photos on the Let’s Roam app, it appears that they prefer portrait orientation and most of us were on desktops that were set up for landscape. So, on my setup, I had duplicate window but in portrait orientation so that the photos would turn up correctly!
At the 1 hour mark, team APAC Predators completed 19 challenges and scored 6,780 points! Yay!! Congrats!!!
We did stay back a bit to try to complete more but eventually finished at Challenge 25 that completely stumped the team!!
Again, huge thanks to @Kristen_NYC for this fun event! It really worked well with Google Maps (in-person and virtually). For us, it was really fun exploring new places and exploring the different cities!
