Recap: [In-Person] Cambodia, July 15, Photowalk with Smartphone

On July 15, we gathered for a meaningful day of exploration, learning, and connection — a smartphone photowalk to the quiet and culturally rich island of Koh Dach. Also known as Silk Island, Koh Dach is just a ferry ride away from Phnom Penh, but it feels like a whole different world — calm, green, and full of stories waiting to be captured.

Each of us arrived on our own motorbikes and crossed the Mekong River together by ferry, which itself was a small adventure. The journey was slow and scenic, allowing us time to look around, talk, and prepare ourselves for the photo session ahead. For many, it was their first time riding to Koh Dach — and the fresh riverside breeze felt like a welcome escape from the city.

As we reached the pagoda where we planned to start our walk, we opened the session with a short sharing session. I gave a quick introduction about the Local Guides program — how we can all contribute photos to Google Maps and help others discover Cambodia, not just through landmarks, but through the little hidden details that locals know best. I shared some personal experience, encouraging everyone to use their phones not just as cameras, but as storytelling tools.

The photography theme of the day was Black & White — a challenge that pushed us to look at textures, shadows, light, and emotion. Whether it was the architecture, monks in their vibrant robes, motorbikes parked under the trees, or daily life in the pagoda, everyone tried to capture something unique in monochrome. We gave each other tips, helped frame shots, and had fun experimenting.

But soon, the weather shifted — dark clouds rolled in and within minutes, the rain started pouring. We had to find quick shelter. Instead of stopping the day, this became another part of the experience. We huddled together under a tin roof near a small school, sitting on wooden benches, sharing stories, and laughing at how unpredictable the weather was. Some were reviewing the photos they had taken, others were just enjoying the sound of rain falling all around.

After the rain softened, we continued. But more than just a photo walk, this moment after the storm gave us something more — time to connect.

We shared the photos we took, gave each other feedback, and just talked. No rush. No formal agenda. It became a space to connect with people who also love storytelling, photography, and community.

By the end of the day, what stayed with us wasn’t just the images we captured — it was the shared journey. From the ferry ride and photo-taking to the rain and real conversations, the whole day reminded us how beautiful and spontaneous these moments can be.

Thank you to everyone who joined the ride.
Let’s continue to explore, learn, and put Cambodia on the map together — one story, one photo at a time.

Thank you for sharing this excellent recap @SophatCHY I specially loved the Black and White photography theme. And the ferry ride seems really amazing. Nothing better than having discussions with fellow LGs huddled during rains.
