Puneri Pagadi - GI Tagging using Google Maps - Challenge

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a name or sign used on products that correspond to a specific geographical location or origin, such as a town, region, or country.

This tag is used to identify goods that have a specific quality, reputation, or other characteristics that are essentially attributable to their geographic origin.

Hundreds of GI Tagged locations exist in India and the world over.

Here are a few examples of GI Tags in India

  1. Darjeeling Tea: The first GI recognized food product in India.
  2. Mysore Silk: Known for its quality and craftsmanship, originating from Karnataka
  3. Kancheepuram Silk: Famous for its rich silk sarees from Tamil Nadu
  4. Nagpur Orange: A well-known variety of orange from Maharashtra

Puneri Pagadi - The Headgear from Pune

This is a traditional headgea from Pune that was used recently until 70 years ago but has gone out of fasion in modern times.

These are now commonly used at functions like marraige or thread ceremony.

A lot of small businesses exist in Pune that sell and rent out the Puneri Pagadi.

Children use it for fancy dress competitions and in theatre dramas.

One such small business that deals in the sale and renting of the Puneri Pagadi is the famous Shalgar Hoisery on Bajirao Road.

I visited here last week and took some storefront photos.

I also captured the shelf photo that displayed various Puneri Pagadi on sale and for rent.

I talked to the owner and he explained me the differences between the various pagadis available with them.

:globe_showing_asia_australia: Shalgar is an excellent place to buy or rent out the Puneri Pagadi.

I visited here and even with GMaps it was a challenge to locate, so I had to ask for the exact directions with nearby people.

The place is tiny but they have a huge collection. The owner and managers were kind to explain the various pagadis and the differences.

:wheelchair_symbol: :cross_mark: The place is not accessible for the differently abled since it is housed in a very old building.
