Photography in Zoo for Google Maps - Tips for shake-less Bird Photography for Beginners & Intermediate Photographers - TravellerG

Deat LG Friends,

I love adding photos of zoos, bird parks, nature parks, etc to Google Maps; I have already added a large collection. (Example [Mysore Zoo](https://maps.app.goo.gl/sQBkE9SZEVo3p7me6))

We Local Guides are thick fans of Photography… right? And ‘Bird photography’ is one of the most popular ones. Bird photography (here, we are discussing caged/aviary birds) is challenging, requiring patience, quick reflexes, and a reasonable understanding of birds’ behaviours. Here are some tips to help you capture better bird shots:

Before the tips, I want to emphasise the importance of respecting birds and their environments. Let us refrain from disturbing them to take better shots. Before starting to shoot, observe the bird, its behaviour, and its environment for a while—this can help you a lot.

For common mobile users, if the bird is not actively moving, the Auto Mode itself can manage (with good light). If the bird is moving, then you need to switch the mobile to Manual Mode with a Sutter-Speed above 1/600 (or more; a bird in flight needs a shutter speed above 1/1800 or more). In mobiles or cameras, a higher shutter speed will demand a higher ISO, which invites more noise; so try to keep ISO at the lowest possible value.

In a normal camera, the preferred Aperture value is f/4 to f/8 whereas this feature is not available in Mobile Cameras. A lower f value gives a blurred background (Bokkeh) which makes the bird look really prominent.

While Composing (whenever possible), try to apply the ‘Rule of Thirds’ - ie. keep the bird a little off the centre with more space in front of the beak (less space, behind). Try to avoid high light which makes the bird less clear.

If you want to read more about this topic, kindly mention it in the comment; I shall elaborate…

The Photographs mentioned in this post are from Peeku Park, Yercaud and Kisna Nature Park, Surat.

Could you follow the points easily? - kindly provide your feedback, which will be very helpful for me - Thanks.

Wonderful photos and tips @TravellerG :+1:

These posts from you are a treasure trove of practical knowledge and are most awaited and loved by local guides.

Since I have only a basic phone with an average-quality camera, most tips won’t apply to me.

But I will try those you shared for mobile phone :handshake:

Excellent post on Photography especially on Birds photography. Now a days most of the advanced mobile phones have such in-built features which users at times are not aware of. This post will certainy help knowing the technical settings while shooting in Pro mode.

There is no comparison in quality of the photo taken by DSLR Camera but with the latest development some mid to high range mobile phones have good lenses with the latest technical specs available for photography. This post of yours @TravellerG is a great value addition to apply those settings. Be it Shutter speed, ISO or the ‘f’ value as described in the post above.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post as I have a vested interest in this area and stunned by the photographs you have shared. What the Clarity and sharpness!

Have you used mobile Camera or DSLR for shooting these photos?

And, finally, I can’t thank you much for sharing your tacit knowledge with everyone here.

Hello fellow LG NJRP,
Thank you for reaching out to me for these details…
I have used Sony RX 10 M4 and mobile iQOO 12 for these shots… both are extremely helpful gears and perform very well. I believe in minimum editing - try for setting my gears for the best performance…
Of course, minor editing I too do and usually use the PC Version of FastStone Photo Editor…

Hope I have answered you…
Can I expect your valuable reply, please.
Thanks once again

Thank you for sharing these details @TravellerG and for your experience with the Sony RX 10 M4 and iQOO 12. It’s inspiring to see your focus on optimizing your gear for the best performance and keeping editing to a minimum—something I admire. FastStone Photo Editor is indeed a great choice for quick and effective edits.

Your insights are very helpful. Thanks again for the valuable information!

Wonderful post with beautiful posts @TravellerG sahab👏
I always learn something new by your informative posts

Thank you so much for your inspiring reply, my dear friend Santosh…

I have used two gears in this: Sony RX 10 M4 and Mobile iQOO 12 - photo #:5 is by the mirrorless…
I have spent more time in capturing (composing/lighting/focussing, etc.) and very short time in editing… Philosophically I believe in it - as you are aware… Editing (AI) can bring any change… right?

“Built in features”
Many times, the owner of the camera won’t study the device in detail…so… many features become hidden…
Once again thank you for your detailed response and carefully studying my post…
Most sincerely
