Nice Terraces in Groningen

Groningen is a vibrant city in the North of Holland with a nice and historic City centre. I have been living here since 1997 and still enjoy the energy the students (1 3rd of the population!) bring to the city.

In this post I will describe some nice places to sit outside and enjoy a drink and a bite to eat.

Poeleplein:

The hotspot when you go out in Groningen. The terraces of the different pubs here are combined in 1 big square which can be confusing since it is possible that you sit somewhere and the person next to you has to order by a different waiter. In the summer it stays crowdy here untill 01:00AM and it will get louder and louder when the evening goes by.

Grote Markt:

The main square in Groningen and it hosts Hollands biggest connected pub De 3 Gezusters. Here you can sit outside all year long. In the wintertime they have heaters. On the opposite side of the square right under the Martinitoren you’ll find De Kostery which is a cosy terrace which serves good lunch, coffee and other drinks. Here you can enjoy the last sunbeams of the evening since they are located on the

Zuiderdiep:

This an upcoming area where more and more pubs and cafés open up. It has a nice diversity of local Dutch pubs and more internationally oriented places. Also some good restaurants are located here. It is close to the red light district and Central Stationof Groningen so attracts a nice internationally diversed crowd.

Noorderplantsoen:

The city park of Groningen. It is very nice to be here in the end of August when they host 3 weeks of Noorderzon which is a free festival with theatre, live music and a lot of foodtrucs. The rest of the year it is quiet and in the middle of it you will find Zondag which is a nice place to go for a drink/ bite to eat. Around the park are also some nice places like Lambik and De Bres.

Hoornsemeer/ Paterswoldsemeer:

Just a 20 min bikeride away to the southend of Groningen you will find a big lake: Paterswoldse meer. Here it is the place to be in the summer for a dip in the water, picnic or to visit one of the restaurants/bars around it. Kaap Hoorn, Paviljoen Van De Dame
