Hello Fellow Local Guides,
Our places of worship are more than spaces of faith and community. They are also places where large numbers of people gather, interact with their surroundings and collectively influence the environment around them.
With this thought, I am organising a Local Guides Meet-up at Jagannath Temple, Noida as part of the “Connect for Sustainability: Together for a Greener Tomorrow” meet-up series.
The purpose of this meet-up is to come together and explore sustainability practices at and around the temple, understand what is already being done, identify opportunities for improvement and discuss how we, as Local Guides, can help make relevant information more visible through Google Maps.
During the meet-up, we will observe and discuss areas such as:
- Waste Management: segregation, reduction of single-use materials and responsible disposal.
- Water Management: water-saving practices, cleanliness and responsible use of this valuable resource.
- Energy & Resources: opportunities for energy efficiency and responsible use of resources.
- Green Spaces & Clean Surroundings: maintaining greenery, cleanliness and the overall environment around the temple.
- Sustainable Visitor Practices: how devotees and visitors can contribute through simple and responsible actions.
- Sustainability on Google Maps: exploring how existing sustainable facilities, initiatives and relevant information can be accurately represented and discovered by visitors.
The objective is not to inspect, audit or criticise the temple, but to observe, learn and have a constructive conversation about sustainability and update the relevant information on Google Maps accordingly.
As Local Guides, we can contribute by documenting what we see responsibly, sharing useful information, recognising good practices and highlighting opportunities that can encourage greater awareness.
A place may already have many sustainable practices. Sometimes the challenge is simply that people don’t know about them.
Through this meet-up, I hope we can create an open platform for Local Guides to exchange experiences and ideas while exploring how our contributions can support more sustainable communities.
And this is just the beginning.
