Hello Fellow Local Guides,
Sustainability is no longer something we can simply talk about, and certainly not just another hashtag. It is a shared responsibility that demands awareness, active participation and, most importantly, meaningful action from each of us.
As Local Guides, we have a unique relationship with the places and communities around us. We discover places, visit Points of Interest (POIs), document our experiences, share information through Google Maps, and help others make informed choices. This gives us an opportunity to look at our local surroundings not only as visitors or contributors, but also through the lens of sustainability.
With this thought, I am excited to introduce a new In-Person Local Guides Meet-up series, “Connect for Sustainability: Together for a Greener Tomorrow.”
The idea
The purpose is simple: bring Local Guides together to observe, discuss, learn and take action[1] around sustainability at the places we visit.
Each meet-up can be organised at a POI or a community space where we can explore the sustainability practices that are already being followed and identify areas where further improvements may be possible.
During the meet-up, we can look at questions such as:
- What sustainable practices are already being implemented at the POI?
- How effectively are these practices being communicated to visitors?
- What opportunities exist to improve waste management, water conservation, energy efficiency, accessibility or responsible use of resources?
- Are there sustainable initiatives or facilities that visitors may not be aware of?
- How can information about these practices be better represented and discovered through Google Maps?
- What sustainable practices could be encouraged or implemented in the future?
- How can Local Guides contribute through better information, observations, reviews, photos and meaningful conversations?
The idea is not to audit or judge a place, but to create a constructive platform where we can observe what is happening, appreciate good practices, identify opportunities and share ideas that may encourage more sustainable choices.
Role of Local Guides
Local Guides already play an important role in helping people discover and understand places through Google Maps. Our contributions can influence how people experience a destination, what they choose to visit and the decisions they make along the way.
That means our role can go beyond simply adding information.
We can help make sustainability visible.
A sustainable initiative that exists but is not known to visitors may have limited impact. By documenting and highlighting relevant information responsibly through Google Maps, we can help people discover sustainable facilities, initiatives and practices and potentially encourage more responsible behaviour.
From reducing waste and protecting local spaces to supporting sustainable businesses, encouraging responsible tourism and promoting greener practices, meaningful change often begins with small, local steps.
From observation to action
This meet-up series is intended to create a space where observation leads to conversation, conversation leads to ideas, and ideas lead to action.
Every observation can create awareness.
Every conversation can inspire an idea.
Every shared experience can help someone learn.
Every small action can contribute to a bigger change.
The goal is to move from awareness to action and from individual efforts to community impact.
Let’s take this beyond one city
I would love to see “Connect for Sustainability” become a series of conversations and actions across different Local Guides communities.
If you are passionate about sustainability, why not organise a similar meet-up in your own city?
Bring together Local Guides who are interested in exploring how our everyday contributions, local observations and collective knowledge can support a more sustainable environment and use the hashtag #ConnectForSustainability.
You can choose a POI, public space, heritage site, nature area, sustainable business or any other relevant location and create your own discussion around the sustainability practices that exist there and the possibilities for improvement.
Because a greener tomorrow will not happen by chance.
It starts with what we choose to notice, what we choose to discuss and, most importantly, what we choose to do today.
