The National Rail Museum, (Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, India) is a premier museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history of Indian Railways. This 11-acre Museum was established in 1977 and has an extensive outdoor and indoor exhibition of vintage locomotives, carriages, and railway memorabilia. I explored this museum when I visited New Delhi for a meet-up in Google’s Noida Office.
This museum includes unique exhibits like the Fairy Queen (one of the world’s oldest working steam locomotives), the Patiala State Monorail (a rare and unique monorail system), etc. The museum also has an indoor gallery, a miniature train ride, and interactive exhibits that engage visitors of all ages.
Visitors can explore a wide range of artefacts, including historical photographs, signalling equipment, and models that highlight the technological evolution of Indian Railways. A visit to the National Rail Museum is both, educational and enjoyable, making it a must-see for railway enthusiasts, students and families alike.
The ‘Rail Cafeteria’ is a beautifully designed structure (refer to photo). And, the public convenience building is accessible (, , ); and, most of the museum also is accessible. The area is neatly maintained and this place is worth visiting.
