Discovering India’s Heritage at the National Museum, New Delhi - Part 3

Dear Local Guides Community,

Happy International Museum Day!

I recently visited the National Museum in New Delhi. Sharing insights on my experience on this treasure trove of historical artefacts as part of the International Museum Day Challenge initiated by @TravellerG and Celebrate International Museum Day with Me - Challenge : Museums with Local Guides initiated by @Rahul001

In this final part of the series, I will share a couple of more unique and interesting tales behind the silent artefacts, which in fact conveys thousands of years of untold history.

Ambaran : A Historical Treasure waiting to be uncovered

Ambaran, a lesser known city in the Akhnoor district of Jammu Kashmir, has recently come into the limelight of Archaeologists. Situated on the bank of Chenab river, it is the oldest Buddhist site found in Jammu Kashmir area. Archaeologists suggest that this area was a Buddhist monastery which remained active for around 900 years, between 2nd Century BC and 7th Century AD. Much more remains to be uncovered as only 10% of the site has been excavated.

There is a photography exhibition going on in the National Museum which has these artefacts on display.

Vrishanana Yogini Statue : From Paris to India

This statue was part of a temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Bundelkhand region, constructed more than 1000 years ago. This statue was smuggled and sold to a private art collector in Paris. In 2013, it was handed over to the Indian embassy in Paris as a goodwill gesture.

I hope you all enjoyed this insightful series of discovering unique stories of museum artefacts.
