Dear LG Community,
I would like to share my experience of visiting probably the most visited place in Delhi, the Lodhi Gardens. Lodhi Gardens has lush green garden and many historical monuments in the same place, along with a small man made lake.
History :
A 90 acre city park which also houses the tombs and a mosque built during the Sayyed and Lodi era in Delhi from 1451 to 1526. It was called Khairpur village before the British cleared the area and built a garden in 1930s. The site is now a protected ASI complex.
There is very less architecture still left which can be related to the Sayyed and Lodi era hence Lodhi Gardens complex is an important landmark in the city. Following monuments can be found inside the complex :
- Bada Gumbad
- Mohammad Shah Sayyed Tomb
- Sikandar Lodi Tomb
- A mausoleum or mosque which was used to offer Prayers
- Athpula Bridge(Eight piered bridge built during Akbar’s reign)
Apart from this there is a large area of lush green garden, where we can enjoy a picnic with family and friends on a warm and sunny winter day. There are a couple of book reading groups which gather at this place every week where people come and read their favourite books for hours. One such group is the Lodhi Reads of which I am an active member.
Accessibility :
Entrance is wheelchair accessible
Wheelchair Accessible parking is available
Entrance to the monuments are not wheelchair friendly as there are steps to be climbed
Public Restrooms are available
It is not a ticketed monument, entry is free
Regards,
