Sheesh Mahal is a centrally located palace within the Shalimar Garden in Delhi. The garden is a Mughal Creation, originally laid out by Izz-un-Nisha, the wife of Emperor Shah Jahan in 1653. It was intended as a retreat and replica of the Shalimar Bagh in Kashmir, which was created by Emperor Jahangir in 1619.
The Shalimar Garden was originally enclosed by a boundary wall, remnants of which can still be seen in certain areas. Sheesh Mahal features reflective surfaces intricate floral paintings and designs some of which still exists. It is constructed of brick masonry and red sandstone, and entered through gates provided on east and west. There is archway flanked on either side by a three-arched dalan. Beyond this archway is a central hall with a compartment at either wing and a three-arched dalan at the back.
On the west of the palace is a Hamam (bath) containing several compartments and corridors. On the northern side is the Baradari having square tank with fountains. Probably there was an arrangement for a jharna or waterfall. Beyond the tank there is another tank which was connected with the former by a water channel. Sheesh Mahal is connected with these tanks through water channels creating a charming ambience which speaks of aesthetic and artistic appreciation of the Mughals.
The building was in ruins till DDA and the Delhi LG stepped in for its restoration. The restored buildings are now open for public
It is Best to enter from Gare No-3 of Shalimar Bagh. There is plenty of parking space near the gate. Entry is free. The nearest metro station is Shalimar bagh station on the Pink line. Public buses are available too. Clean well maintained restrooms are there. An excellent cafe is there inside the park as well
