I visited the Sheesh Mahal in Delhi after visiting a place with a similar name in Farrukhabad and found that the architecture and layout were remarkably similar.
This monument is also very close to the Makbar-e-Paik meaning the tomb of an unknown traveller.
This monument is also very close to the Makbar-e-Paik meaning the tomb of an unknown traveller.
The word Sheesh Mahal derives not only from the fact that there were plenty of mirror work that reflects but also the large water bodies and the fountains that are present everywhere that also reflect the surroundings.
Today the monument is only a shadow of its glorious past.
The monument Sheesh Mahal is indeed beautiful.
The walls have some beautiful patterns painted that survive to this day to tell the story of its glorious past.
I experienced serenity and joy on the Sheesh Mahal premises.
Some good samaritans have also placed a bird-feeder out there.
However, reaching this place was a herculean task. The road was very narrow and it is not at all advisable to go by car.
However, there are plenty of tea stalls where I enjoyed the best tea of the year at this small Chai shop.
On the way, I recollected memories from my childhood seeing this Ice-Gola seller who would grate ice and dip it in sweetened syrup for the kids to enjoy.
It would be better if you park the car on the main road and walk half about 500 meters to reach the nearby DDA Park where the monument is nestled.
And the road is not boring at all. On the way, I saw this classic peddled rickshaw mobile business that is unique to Delhi, this time a laundry delivery.
On the last leg and inside the park the road is in very good condition and has tall palm trees lined up on one side.
How to Reach
The Sheesh Mahal is walking distance from Jahangirpuri Metro Station though I piled up in a tuk-tuk for INR 20 since I was not sure about the entrance of the vast DDA Park that hosts this structure.
As I walked through the narrow lanes that lead to the Sheesh Mahal, I met this mobile shoe-polish person and got my shoes polished just for INR 15
Accessibility Features
The park is accessible via ramps but the interiors of the Sheesh Mahal palace have stairs without ramps or railing.
So it remains virtually out of reach for those using a wheelchair.
Climbing up the stairs for a disabled person with crutches is possible since the steps are of less height and are wide.
