Connect feature spotlight: Translate what others share into your language

Hey there! Welcome to our weekly mini series where we, the Connect Moderators, share tips and tricks on how to enjoy the redesigned Connect to the fullest. Every Thursday, we will focus on one new feature or functionality to help you feel more at home.

My name is Morten. I’m a Local Guide Level 10 from Denmark. I focus on making edits on Google Maps :writing_hand: and taking helpful photos :camera_with_flash:. I have made more than 103K approved edits, and my total views are now approaching 2 billion. If you would like more photo views, please enjoy my Storefront Photography series. Last year in March, I was invited to become a Connect Moderator.

This week, the spotlight is on the new and nifty translation tool. Let’s get started!

A GIF of the Globe icon changing color from black to blue and back again.

This is the Globe icon to tap when you need something translated.

To use this tool, you must first choose your preferred language on Connect. You only need to do this once. Yes, only once!

How to choose your preferred language

Click this link to choose your language under Interface language if you haven’t already. To access the same settings, you can also tap your profile image in the top right-hand corner of the screen, then select Preferences, and then choose Interface.

The screenshot below shows where to select your interface language. Click/tap, and a drop-down list of all the available languages will appear.

After selecting your language, please press the blue Save changes button located further down the page.

Now, the translation tool is ready to use. Easy, right?

This language setting also decides which language is used in menus, buttons, and so on. Not every language is fully implemented, and not all languages are available.

How to use the translation tool

Tap the Globe icon to translate text in topics and comments that is not in your preferred language. Locate the black icon just underneath the text you want translated.

Tap the Globe, and the translated text will appear below the original text, with a blue Globe icon to indicate it is a translation.

If you no longer wish to see the translation, simply tap the blue icon.

In the old Connect, translations were applied to entire pages. Translations are currently only available for individual texts. There are a few temporary issues the team is currently working on fixing: it seems that in some instances, the Globe icon is not appearing and longer posts are not translated in their entirety. But in most cases, you should be able to use this tool as expected!

Tip: If you wish to translate entire pages, use the built-in translator in your browser.

I love the new translation tool because it is so much faster and easier to use. We no longer need to scroll down repeatedly as was necessary on the old Connect, as shown in this video:

Vielen Dank @MortenCopenhagen für die hilfreichen Tipps.
Ich habe diese Einstellung seit ihrem 1. Hinweis direkt eingestellt.
Bei kurzen Texten funktioniert es in der Regel auch gut.
Nur gestern habe ich wieder einen Beitrag gehabt da endete die Übersetzung bis zum 1. Bild mit Unterbeschreibung und von dort an musste ich Stück für Stück die 2. Übersetzungsmöglichkeit verwenden.
Langatmig und keine Freude.
Das ist schon öfters vorgekommen auch bei Silvis Beitrag aus LA

Great post @MortenCopenhagen and thanks for sharing your excellent tip on using the browser’s translation tool to translate the entire page! That can come in really handy at times rather than clicking on the globe icon all the time! Nice!! :+1:

Hi @MortenCopenhagen ,

I am facing problems choosing Marathi and Hindi here:

Since you have shown the example of the Marathi language, can you explain in detail how to do that, please?

Cheers!

Hi @AjitThite

I used Google Translate to identify the language in this screenshot to be Hindi.

I’m sorry if it is actually Marathi. Please let me know how to fix this, or should I use another example in the screenshots?

Is the problem that Hindi and Marathi are not to be found on the Inteface dropdown list?

Others have reported that their languages are also missing from the list. And even if a language is in the list, not all menus and buttons are yet translated from English.

If you want to report a language as missing please use the redesign feedback form.

When you search the list, please don’t type in English as the names on the list are in their respective languages. Maybe “हिंदी” will work?

I am afriad it is not working that way either, @MortenCopenhagen .

I will report it as you’ve suggested earlier. Thanks for you’re support. If you can find any other solution, please do share.

Cheers!
