Community Map Guide: Find your digital footprint 👣

Hello Local Guides! :waving_hand:

Finding that restaurant you visited last week or a park you saved months ago is much easier with the updated “Your recent places” section in Google Maps. This feature, located in the You tab, centralizes your recent travels and provides powerful filters to help you narrow down your search.

Here is how to use and search through your recent places on Android.

Accessing “Your Recent Places”

  1. Open the Google Maps app.

  2. Tap the You tab at the bottom right of the screen.

  3. Locate the Your recent places section.

  4. Tap See all to open the full history and filtering menu.

Once you are in the “Your recent places” view, you can use the filter carousel at the top to find exactly what you’re looking for:

:round_pushpin:Search by Area

This filter groups your history by location.

  • Tap Area.

  • Select a specific city or neighborhood from the list.

  • Maps will then show only the places you visited or interacted with within that specific geographic boundary.

:hamburger: Search by Category

If you can’t remember the name but remember what kind of place it was, use this:

  • Tap Category.

  • Choose from options like Food & drink, Shopping, Culture, Attractions, or Hotels.

  • This is perfect for finding that “one coffee shop” you stopped at during a busy day.

:star: Search by Saved

This helps you distinguish between places you just happened to pass through and those you intentionally saved places in lists.

  • Tap the Saved filter.

  • The list will narrow down to places that are currently in one of your lists (like “Favorites” or “Want to Go”).

:spiral_calendar: Search by Maps History

This is the broadest view, focusing on your digital interactions.

  • Tap Maps history.

  • This shows places based on your recent activity, such as locations you searched for, viewed, or got directions to, even if you didn’t physically visit them yet.

Managing Your History

Next to each place in the list, you will see a Bookmark icon and a Three-dot menu:

  • Bookmark: Instantly save the place to a list.

  • Three-dot menu: Use this to Share the location, see your full Visit history for that specific spot, or Delete it from your history entirely.

Note: For “Your recent places” to be fully accurate, ensure that Location History (Timeline) and Web & App Activity are turned on in your Google Account settings.

Nice one, @NareshDarji bhai…

We spend so much time adding places and edits on Maps, but rarely stop to look at our own trail. This is a good reminder to actually see where we’ve been and how everything connects over time.

Clear, useful, and something many guides don’t realise exists. Thanks for sharing this.
