Have you noticed the “You” tab in Google Maps lately? It’s one of those under-the-hood gems that quietly ties together a bunch of super useful features - all about you, your journeys, your places, and your life on the map. If you’ve ever wondered where Google keeps your visited places, saved spots, notifications, or maps for work and travel, the “You” tab is where the magic happens. 
Let’s break it down and make sense of everything you’ll find there. 
What you can see in the ‘You’ Tab
I recently explored this in detail and screen-recorded the experience so you can see every feature live in action. 
Here’s everything you can find in the “You” tab — beyond what most people know:
What you can see in the ‘You’ Tab
As you can see in the video, this tab is packed with features. It is not just about saved places; it is a complete dashboard. Here is exactly what you will find:

Saved Lists: This is where all your lists live (Favorites, Want to go, etc.). The most important one here is the Labelled list - this is where you can set your Home 
and Work 
locations. Once set, navigating to them is just one click away. -
Notifications: You can check your specific updates, shared list alerts, and messages right here without switching tabs.

Recently Saved: Shows the places you just bookmarked. Very useful if you were searching for a cafe five minutes ago and want to find it quickly. -
Nearby Saved: This is a hidden gem! If you are in a market or a new area, check this to see if any of your bookmarked places are nearby. No need to scroll through the whole map. -
Timeline: This section is huge and has its own detailed dashboard:-
Day: Shows your movement day-by-day. -
Trips: Groups your travel history into specific trips (like your last holiday). -
Insights: Gives you month-wise stats on how much you traveled (walking, driving, flying). -
Places: Shows exactly where you visited, sorted by categories like Food & Drink 
, Shopping 
, etc. -
Cities: A list of all cities you have visited with the number of places in each. You can even sort them by recent or alphabetically to find what you are looking for. -
World: The big picture! It highlights the countries and cities you have covered globally. -
Backup & Settings: Options to backup your data and manage settings to keep your history safe. Google Maps now saves your Timeline (formerly Location History) on your device by default, which gives you more control and privacy over your data - but that also means that if you lose your phone or switch to a new one without backing up, your timeline history can disappear from the app. To prevent this, you’ll see a Backup option (cloud icon) in the Timeline section of the “You” tab - tapping it lets you save an encrypted copy of your timelines to Google’s cloud so you can restore it later on a new device.Without this cloud backup enabled, your rich record of places visited and trips taken lives only on the original device, and it won’t automatically carry over if you change phones or reset your current one - meaning priceless memories and travel history could be lost forever. Turning on backup ensures your Timeline stays safe and retrievable even when you switch devices, giving you peace of mind as you explore new places.

How is it useful?
Using the ‘You’ tab makes life very sorted. Here is how:

Never Forget a Recommendation: How many times has a friend told you about a nice place and you forgot the name? Save it to “Want to go.” Next time you open the ‘You’ tab, it’s there waiting for you. -
Plan Trips Tension-Free: Create a list called “Goa Trip” and add all the beaches and shacks. When you reach there, just check Nearby saved. No confusion at all. -
Relive Your Memories: The Timeline is pure nostalgia. You can go back to a specific date and see exactly where you went. Great for remembering that hidden cafe from your last vacation.
