Celebrating World Bicycle Day: My Journey on Two Wheels

Every year on June 3, the world celebrates World Bicycle Day, a global initiative that highlights the many benefits of cycling and encourages people to embrace bicycles as a means of transportation, recreation, and sustainable living.

This special day recognizes the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly mode of transport. It also promotes awareness of the positive impact cycling has on public health, environmental sustainability, and community development. Around the world, people participate in cycling events, learn about the history of bicycles, and advocate for better cycling infrastructure, including safer bike lanes and improved parking facilities.

My Journey with Bicycles:

My relationship with cycling began in childhood. I learned to ride a bicycle when I was in Class 3, and cycling has remained an important part of my life ever since.

I received my first bicycle as a gift while studying in Class 7. However, my true cycling journey began in 2017 when I purchased a new bicycle. Since then, I have used every available office holiday to explore different regions of Bangladesh on two wheels.

So far, I have traveled through 39 of the country’s 64 districts, both with and without my bicycle. My goal is to complete the remaining districts by bicycle and eventually expand my adventures beyond Bangladesh. Countries such as Sri Lanka, India, Cambodia, and many others are already on my cycling bucket list.

According to my recorded data, I have cycled a total of 25,640 kilometers. My journeys have taken me through mountains, along coastlines, and into remote rural communities. Cycling is not only my preferred method of adventure travel but also my regular mode of commuting to and from work.

My Greatest Inspiration:

The person who inspired me most to continue cycling is my grandfather.

He was a school teacher who relied on a bicycle for his daily transportation. Throughout his life, he regularly traveled both short and long distances by bicycle. Remarkably, he remained free from major health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure and passed away at the age of 70.

His active lifestyle left a lasting impression on me. Watching his dedication to cycling inspired me to adopt the same habit and commit to cycling throughout my life.

Contributing to Google Maps Through Cycling:

Cycling has also given me a unique opportunity to contribute to Google Maps and help others discover places more easily.

Whenever I plan a trip, I use Google Maps extensively to study routes, explore satellite imagery, and understand the terrain before setting out. During my journeys, I actively contribute by adding photos, writing reviews, updating business information, adding new places, and removing spam listings.
These contributions have become an integral part of my travel experience.

What World Bicycle Day Means to Me:

World Bicycle Day reminds us that a bicycle is much more than a vehicle. It is a tool for exploration, health, freedom, and environmental responsibility.
Cycling is one of the cleanest and most accessible forms of transportation available. It helps reduce pollution, promotes healthier lifestyles, and creates a stronger connection between people and the places they visit.

If you have not started cycling yet, there is no better time than now. Whether for commuting, fitness, adventure, or simply enjoying the outdoors, every ride brings benefits for both you and the environment.

For me, cycling is not just a hobby—it is a lifelong journey, and I look forward to many more kilometers on the road ahead.
