Celebrate Recycle Awareness Week with Local Guides ♻️ ⭐

Hy Local Guides, :recycling_symbol:

This week, we come together to celebrate Recycle Awareness Week ♻️ by reflecting on every conscious choice we make, carrying a tote bag, refusing a single-use plastic straw or mapping an e-waste drop-off point which creates a ripple effect across our communities.

Recycling is not just an isolated chore at home; it is an active, community-wide lifestyle woven directly into the ways we travel, contributing & sharing on Google Maps.

From local craftsmanship to global community: these handcrafted, reusable :recycling_symbol: bags from Sanchi Bags showcase how everyday swaps make a difference like this custom “Sustainable Pouch by Kerala Local Guides” distributed to local guides at ConnectLIVE Singapore.

The most powerful steps toward sustainability start right in our bags and on our dining tables. Choosing paper bags over plastic, carrying reusable tumblers and cutlery & refilling water bottles dramatically cut down on single-use waste. By mapping these eco-friendly alternatives, from water refill points and recycling bins to green cafes, we make sustainable choices accessible and effortless for the entire community.

Community Voices Leading the Green Shift :four_leaf_clover:

The heart of our community has always been the stories and on-the-ground actions of fellow Local Guides around the globe. Across our community, sustainability with local guides :recycling_symbol: starts with simple, consistent everyday habits, a sentiment we also explored while championing paper bags :shopping_bags: over disposable plastic.

This commitment comes alive through real experiences shared across our platform. During a three-day gathering in Bali (MUN #5 :mirror_ball:), @Irwin_R showcased how community gatherings can transcend regular meetups by embedding environmental stewardship and sustainability directly into cultural exploration. @Kumaarsantosh shared practical habits on choosing refillable options to cut down daily waste :potable_water:, demonstrating the rhythm of curbing disposables before they even reach a landfill.

Every object holds a story of potential reuse. @KetanChhaniyara reflected on valuable environmental lessons learned from a simple reusable bottle :cup_with_straw:, while @curatorofmemory highlighted how everyday containers can find a purposeful second life :dizzy:.

Our choices while moving through cities matter just as much. @TusharSuradkar documented taking public transit and choosing regional, mindful dining between Pune and Mumbai :high_voltage:, illustrating how sustainable transit drastically shrinks our carbon footprint on the go. Finally, @Supriyadevkar captured how keen observations of everyday green practices spark wider community action :green_heart:, proving that awareness always precedes meaningful change.

How you can Map for Recycling Awareness :recycling_symbol:?

  • Highlight Recycling Drop-offs locations :recycling_symbol:: Add & highlight battery drop-offs, e-waste centers, compost hubs & reverse vending machines in Google Maps.

  • Support Eco-Conscious Local Businesses :glowing_star:: Support local cafes and shops in your reviews that offer reusables bags, cups & plastic free packaging.

  • Share How You Sustainably Contribute to the Community :dizzy:: Document your eco-friendly meetups, mapping initiatives, and daily green practices on Connect to inspire local guides worldwide.

Every pin we drop, review we write & sustainable habits we share helps make eco-friendly living a little easier for everyone around us. Let’s continue turning small, mindful choices into meaningful change across the globe.

How are you and your local community contributing to recycling and reducing waste this week? Share your favourite eco-friendly mapping tips or local initiatives in the comments below :backhand_index_pointing_down:t3:.

I haven’t received the local guide badge yet. What should I do? When will I get it? How will I get it? I want it.

To get your Local Guide badge, you just need to reach Level 4 (250 points) on Google Maps by adding reviews, photos, missing places or edits. Once you hit 250 points, the badge unlocks automatically.

Are you talking about any physical badge or Connect Badges?

Also, a quick safety heads-up: it looks like your username might be your phone number. Under the Connect guidelines, sharing personal contact details publicly isn’t allowed to protect your privacy. You can easily change it by going to Settings > Personal > Username and picking a your name or nickname instead.

I still haven’t received the Local Guide badge, what should I do?
