Today is International International Colour Blindness Day (September 6th) and we as a local guide are passionate to make our world more physically and visually accessible for everyone. Today marks the day to contribute more inclusively to Google Maps so that persons with colour blindness can navigate & travel with ease.
Colour Blindness is not seeing the world in black & white but difficulty/ability in distinguishing between certain colours.
How to contribute towards Google Maps on this visual accessibility day.

- Adding a well described Review
- When you add a place or review to an existing one on Google Maps, try to add a well descriptive review rather than going for just a rating. Rather than including just colours of the interior/exterior of the business, you can include how the interior/exterior looks & feels. For example : instead of saying “amazing purple interior cafe”, you can add “cafe with purple or dark themed interior”. You can also include signs placed in the business. - Take purposeful photos with clarity
- When you take a photo which you upload to Google Maps, try to make the photo well lighted, clear & contract. Focus on capturing details that’s not solely on colours like accessibility or any signs, texture of the building or close up of the menu. Avoid taking photos with glare or poor lighting as it will be difficult to see or read. - Check up on Accessibility
- While answering questions or editing attributes, look for information on visual accessibility. Does the interior/venue have well lighted pathways? Are there any tactile pathways? Is there any written menu or a Braille menu? These small contributions help in a big way for visual accessibility.
Let’s make this day to promote & make our community aware about colour blindness and make our contributions helpful for visual accessibility & persons with colour blindness.
