Celebrate Art's Birthday with Me 🎨✨

Hy Local Guides, :artist_palette:

Did you know that January 17th is celebrated internationally as Art's Birthday? Today, let’s take a moment to take you on a virtual tour to celebrate this special day. But first, a little bit of history.

What’s about Art’s Birthday? :paintbrush:

This day was started by a French artist Robert Filliou in 1963. He humorously stated that Art was born exactly 1,000,000 years ago when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water.

Since then, artists and art lovers around the world celebrate this day to remind ourselves that art is everywhere & in every person’s heart.

To celebrate Art’s Birthday this year, I want to share my experience visiting a truly unique space : the KaChaTaThaPa Art Gallery by N. Bhattathiri.

This art gallery isn’t just a typical painting gallery but a unique gallery that dedicated a space for calligraphy.

N. Bhattathiri mainly focuses malayalam calligraphy which is why name of the gallery, Ka-Cha-Ta-Tha-Pa (ക-ച-ട-ത-പ) resonates with malayalam language consonants. It perfectly sets the tone for a gallery that celebrates the alphabet. Walking through the gallery, you realize that language is art. The strokes are bold, rhythmic and incredibly expressive.

Gallery is free to enter and entry Time is from 10am to 8pm with Monday & public holidays being closed. Here’s my review :writing_hand:t2: to the art gallery.

Speaking of art, I cannot forget that we have a massive art celebration happening right now in our city.

As many of you know, the Kochi Mega Meetup 2026 :sparkles: is just around the corner. We are incredibly lucky that mega-meetup coincides with the Kochi-Muziris Biennale :artist_palette: (KMB), which is currently ongoing until March 2026.

KMB is Asia’s largest contemporary Art Festival in which the whole island of Fort Kochi transforms into an open canvas. Old warehouses :house:, heritage buildings :school: and public spaces are turned into art installations.

If you are attending the Mega Meetup, let’s make sure we capture the spirit of Art’s Birthday by exploring these creative spaces together.

Let’s celebrate this upcoming day with the community

  • If you could dedicate a birthday wish to Art today, what creative art activity would you do to celebrate?
  • What is the most surprising or unique piece of street art :pushpin: you have found on Google Maps?
  • Do you visit any local art galleries in your neighborhood? Share those experiences in the comments below :backhand_index_pointing_down:t2:.

Share your photos and stories in the comments below. Happy Art’s Birthday, everyone. :artist_palette:
