Burano and the Venetian Lagoon - Inside a Crayon Box

Writing about Venice and his Lagoon is not very simple. Venice and the Lagoon, and the other islands inside the lagoon, are part of a complex ecosystem with a lot of different aspects. The heterogeneity of what we call Venice is clearly visible by clicking on this link.

Mestre, on the mainland, is representing the Industrial / Commercial part of the area.

Venezia, the unique city, is the touristic, overcrowded aspect, as opposed to Lio Piccolo, the rural area of the Lagoon, where quiet and nature are the absolute protagonists.

Venice, the crowd and the parties of Carnival on one side (How do you celebrate Carnival? ), and the silence of the nature on the other, here on this beautiful post written by @AntonellaGr : Venice, the lagoon and sustainable tourism

Among them, the islands

If you look at the maps, you will see a lot of small islands in the Venetian Lagoon. On the Islands, one part of the Venetian economy still be active, even if some of them is abandoned now. Today we will reach Burano, the village on the island further away from Venice.

To reach Burano you have to use the ferry, which in Venice takes the place of the bus. In this link you can see [the route of the ferry](http://in%20this link you can see the route of the ferry)

The first Island that we see is San Michele, the Venetian Cemetery. Yes the cemetery is in a walled island. On the way, you will see the boat with Dante and Virgil, who point the way.

Next stop: Murano. Murano glass is well known worldwide (isn’t it, @TraciC ?) but, how many of you have an I dea of what Murano is?

We know the beautiful, colored, fragile products, and we love them.

As the glass is produced by fusion, you need furnaces to do the work. This is how Murano looks like, when you approach the island: a series of furnaces, a kind of post-Industrial city of a Mad Max movie.

And finally, slowly, you reach Burano. You will understand where Burano is when you will start to see a stain of colors over the water. Because this is what Burano is: a crayon box with the people living inside. You can get lost in the alleys and along the canals of this colorful little Venice. The sense of orientation is lost after a few minutes, in the alleys that seem all the same, even if each one is different from the other.

To find the way you look at the Bell Tower, that is clearly visible from every alley of the village. Inclined of an impossible angle, like a kind of Venetian “Pisa’s Tower”, it seems to be the only building that have his natural color.

And finally when, following the bell tower, you reach the main square, you understand what Burano is famous for. Do you know what they produce in this island?

In Burano they produce laces. In Burano they have always produced laces. The lace school was founded in Burano in 1875, and after three years it already had more than one hundred students. Even today, the Burano laces are among the most exclusive and expensive in the world.

There is more to write, and I have more photos to share, but the post is becoming quite long, so I will close here.

If you want to see more, you just need to ask, and I will upload more photo on the replies.

Are you excited now about visiting Burano?

Burano is amazing. Next stop Isola degli Armeni and I will call my personal Armenian guide, let’s say next spring…

Here is my contribution to Burano at sunset with my “typical” shadow and light

Ciao @ErmesT ,

Hi @ErmesT

Good and beautiful post but little information for me.
I’m not interested in lace.

Is Libro d’oro di Murano real gold?
Thanks
Does paper weight Murano cost a lot?

Genuine.

Thanks

Ciao @ErmesT ,

what a beautiful post, I’ve enjoyed so much reading about Burano and watching your amazing and super colorful photos.

You know what, I’ve never been there! Venice yes, many times, but never in Burano always for time or logistic reasons … I miss that and I need to take care about this huge miss, I actually feel embarrassed about that hehe :kissing_smiling_eyes: .

Thank you very much for sharing your visit with us.

Thank you for asking @To_paul ,

Murano and the beautiful glass products will be part of a future post, but I am happy to respond to your questions.

  • Venetians started to produce Gold foil in Murano centuries ago. The lamina foil, introduced in glass, has been widely used in the mosaics of the Saint Mark’s Basilica . The Gold Book have gold foil in the cover. Yes, real gold, even if we are talking about less than a gram. The book is listing the Original Families of Burano, the original glass makers
  • Original paperweight (we call it Murrina) is quite expensive but, as you have seen in the photo on the post, it is extremely beautiful. Visiting Murano you will have the opportunity to see the glass makers at work.

I am adding a photo here about reflections, as I see you are interested in the subject

Hi @ErmesT

The picture is great, but I do not understand why Ermes Toun 2020 appears only once
I thought the whole book was made of solid gold, I thought it had many pages.
Paperweight must buy sometime.
Thanks for the clarifications, I look forward to the next post

@ErmesT — if I didn’t see the canals, crayon colored painted Burano houses could be in the Caribbean.

I wonder did the neighborhoods or streets get together and discussed what color each building will be painted because each building has a different color, to the point of being color coordinated.

This is a wonderful series you created here. As I told @AntonellaGr , if you don’t live near Venice, you would never imagine what life is like living as a local.

Cheers,

Karen

Grazie @Giu_DiB

quello che si sa è che il trono è del V secolo DC, per cui è compatibile con il periodo in cui Attila comandava gli Unni.

Magari possiamo andarci assieme, da Burano a Torcello sono 5 minuti di ferry

We were talking with @AntonellaGr about the colors when we were on the ferry, on our way back to Venice, @KarenVChin , but we don’t have an answer about how they choose the colors of the houses.

To add a note of “color”, Burano is a place where the people live a real life. They don’t have so much space inside the houses, so it is very common to see clothes hanging out to dry on the street.

Perche’ no, molto volentieri @ErmesT ! Magari ci mettiamo d’accordo con @Giu_DiB se passa da queste parti  .
