What’s this all about?
Well back in June 2023, @Rednewt74 wrote an interesting post about photo views. He posted 4 different pairs of photos and asked everyone to pick which one got the most views. If you haven’t already done so, you should read his Photo A or B- Which one got the most views? post. It is precisely this line of questioning that led me to start posting here on Connect what have now come to be known as the Leaderboards. Let me recap with…
A little bit of history
Back in early 2020 I visited and took several photos at a local hardware store. I posted these photos on Maps. To my total surprise, some time later I noticed that of these photos, the one that got the most views was the one I least expected. Not only that, it ended up becoming my one photo with the most overall views! I was…
Puzzled and very curious about this
so I set off on a quest to find out if other Local Guides had a similar story about their most viewed photo and it was at this point that I had an epiphany, that aha moment! I thought what would be interesting is to have a leaderboard of most viewed photos. I called these photos our “star photo” and this was when the Leaderboards were born. You can read about this epiphany here but for now…
Back to what this post is about.
Below I show two photos of an ALDI supermarket. Both were uploaded onto Maps at the same time but only one of these is the star of the photos I took of this supermarket. Your challenge is to guess which one is the star and in the comments below, feel free explain why you think so. Simple hey!
A final note
This is part 1 of a 3 part poll so when you finish here, select this link and let’s see how good you are in part 2.
Photo A is a night-time photo of the storefront of an ALDI supermarket. As you can see, this photo was taken from directly in front of the supermarket storefront.
Photo B: A night time photo of the storefront of an ALDI supermarket. As you can see, this photo was taken from the left hand side of the supermarket and at an angle to he storefront.
So now it’s over to you. Photo A or B - Which photo has the most views and in the comments below, feel free to explain why you think so!
Photo A has the most views
Photo B has the most views
0voters
When I close the poll I will show the voting results.
I will chime in here since i have been monitoring thistype of thing for years. First off, photo A should have the most views since B shows a license plate number which imo is a no no. But maps is very unpredictable so it could be either, and not sure if anyone really knows the methodology in which a feature photo is selected.
Neuther photo is great, but that is also totally subjective, but i would say A.
At the time of posting the photos on Maps I also couldn’t decide but uploaded both as I was interested to test @TerryPG’s 45%/45% hypothesis although while Terry talks about signage, in this case it’s not to do with signage but more to see if the angle of the shot plays some importance. If you haven’t read Terry’s The 90 Degree Photo post I recommend that you do
I actually don’t think the photos are great @PrasadVR and from my experience I’ve come to believe that when it comes to Maps this is not important - when we add photos to Maps, or any media type in fact, we shouldn’t focus on taking shots that we like but shots that Google likes and are most useful to Maps users. Having said that, it’s interesting how you say that Photo A is more appealing to you. Thanks for voting and adding your comment. It will be interesting to see the end result of the voting Prasad.
It’s interesting that like @PrasadVR you find Photo A more attractive @NituSingh. Thanks for voting and adding your comment. It will be interesting to see the end result of the voting.
I totally agree with you on this point @StevenBerlin but as I mentioned in my reply to @PrasadVR, I believe that when it comes to Maps, taking great photos or any media type in fact is not important. We shouldn’t focus on taking shots that we like but shots that Google likes and are most useful to Maps users.
It’s great that you picked up the license plate number as I was going to comment on that in my post but decided not to and I couldn’t agree with you more about the unpredictability of Maps.
Anyway, from your comment it seems that you are undecided but if you voted, and hopefully you did, you would have had to make a choice. Given that you have been monitoring this type of thing for years, it will be interesting to see the end result of the voting
Based on a previously published article about 90 degree shots from a corner of the storefront, I tend to avoid taking pictures like Photo A. I don’t like the texture or appearance of Photo B, nor the licence plate in it, but that’s where my vote is going.
Thanks for mentioning the “previously published article about 90 degree shots from a corner of the storefront” @tony_b and I hope that the author of the article makes an appearance here and votes. I was particularly interested in reading that you tend to “avoid taking pictures like Photo A” and wonder if this is because of the influence of the said author and given that you said that you “don’t like the texture or appearance of Photo B, nor the licence plate in it” but chose it regardless, am I right to assume that that influences was significant?
I personally like photo B more
Less distraction
Yes as highlighted number plate
If I was an algorithm I’d say photo A wins
But in fairness u gave 2 options to maps
You obviously like one over the other too
Please leave this in the findings
My favorite photo B
Maps favourite A as front & center
Maybe I’m good different, notice 2 spellings in my reply

I wish i could have that mentality of taking photos that maps agree with is more important. Hehe. I think my photographic mind wants to take cool photos on every store lol.
