Hello LG community
I would like to share heritage and history photos taken during my many travels around Sri Lanka and few other countries.
It would be great if all of you can share your photos and discoveries showcasing the history and heritage your country and other countries you have visited.
I will start the thread with a UNESCO world heritage site from Sri Lanka
Sigiriya
Believed to be the fortress palace of King Kashapa ( 477 BC) the other school of thoughts attributes this wonder to Kuvera half-brother of mythical king Ravana believed to ruled Lanka 5000 years ago No historical evidence except in Ramayanaya ,a fictional work in Indian history ). Some even suggest that it is a monastery.
Visitors can see the ruins of the access path at water fountain garden, boulder garden at the middle and the ruins of the palace in on the top of the rock. there is a separate access to see world famous Sigiriya Frescos - a wall painting of maidens and Mirror wall - where visitors of ancient time had written poems and creative phrases admiring the frescos and the palace.

Thanks for sharing these beautiful pictures and the exciting story behind them, @Prasanna-Aryaprema. Such topics especially interest me as I am an archaeologist by my original trade and currently work for our heritage services (a government office) but used to work for our "local" UNESCO World Heritage site as an archaeologist. It's a Late Roman (Early Christian) cemetery with dozens of smaller and bigger cemetery chapels - usually with crypts (or burial chambers) underneath - some of which have beautiful frescoes.
Last year there was an exhibition (still open) for which I made a reconstruction of the site and it was printed across a huge board (more than 8 metres long and 2.5 metres high). Here is the place on the map. And here is a short video I also made for the exhibition describing the a building and its structure:

Hi @Csaba
It's a pleasure to connect with an archeologist. I am a great fan of history & archeology.
Your Video is wonderful, I visited your Google map photos too and awestruck with beautiful places you have captured. i will have to check all of your pictures leisurely and of course, google to get more details about them :).
Why don't you upload some pictures in this thread for like-minded people?
Sri Lanka has a rich heritage and a heaven for archeologists and fans alike. make a point to visit here someday. I vouch that you will not get disappointed. until then enjoy the future posts I am hoping to bring to you weekly or so.
cheers

saludos Farid

Hi @FaridTDF
Happy to know that you are an archeological fan
Wonderful pictures,
There are some similar ruins in Sri Lanka in Pollonaruwa 12 to 13 Century. I will post some pictures from my archive soon.
Visit Srinlanka one day. You will find a Heaven in archeology with documented history over 2500 years. What's more, you get sea and beaches, tea plantations and beautiful vistas all within 300 km .
Cheers
Prasanna
