Exclusive: Edit a road segment in Google Maps

Edit a road segment on Google Maps for desktopEdit a road segment on Google Maps for desktop

4/27/17 UPDATE: The ability to edit road segments in Google Maps on Android and iOS is now available to all Google Maps users.

As we announced last November, we’re working to graduate Map Maker functionality into core Google Maps products. We have since released features enabling Local Guides to moderate recent edits to nearby places on Google Maps for Android and on your desktop computer (with an iOS version coming soon). We are focused on continuing to develop great moderation experiences, so stay tuned for new updates throughout the year.

One of the most requested features to bring to Google Maps from Map Maker is the ability to add and edit roads. Today we are launching the first part of a revamped editing flow in Google Maps targeting road segment editing. This first launch features a new selection UI and the ability to report issues on multiple road segments at once on desktop Google Maps (for Level 5 Local Guides) and Google Maps for Android (slowly rolling out to everyone).

How to edit a road segment:

  1. Open Google Maps on your desktop computer OR the Google Maps app for Android
  2. Tap = to open the side menu
  3. Scroll down to “Send Feedback”
  4. Tap “Edit the map”
  5. Tap the road segment you want to edit
  6. Tap “Next”
  7. Suggest the changes for the road you selected (Name, Incorrectly drawn, One-way/two-way, Closed, or Private)
  8. Tap Send

Look for more announcements in the future, including the ability to report a missing road, report issues on a full route, and further down the line, report more complex attributes like real-time closures and events.

We’re excited to hear your feedback on this first step as we improve the road editing process in Google Maps, working towards our goal of assisting everyone as they navigate the world around them.

I am seeing multiple public roads that are incorrectly marked as private. They are public, and marking them as private deletes the street view for these roads... How should I report this?

This is great!

However, I have noticed several small byroads that are missing on Google Maps in my area. Is there a way I can add them to Maps? So in this case I will no be editing an exisitng road segment, but adding a completely new one. Is this possible?

Level 6
No offense intended, but this procedure is not to EDIT a map, it is to REPORT a change to a map. Huge difference. Map Maker was useful. This reporting is not. For the past year, I have repeatedly reported a section of road in our area that has not existed for decades (there is now a city park where the road used to be, clearly visible in Google Earth), yet it has never been removed. With Map Maker, I simply made the edit, and a day later my change would appear on the map. I also used Map Maker to quickly and easily fix bike routes that were incorrect. Now it takes paragraphs to explain the changes, and when I check the results, the wrong edits are often made, if they are even made at all. This is not progress.

Can you give any info when this functionality will be available in my region (Bosnia and Hercegovina)?

@-Rudy-, I agree.

In the forum post linked above, Googler @GusMoreira made the following clarification on 20 November 2017,

"Adding missing roads has a bit more complex system than adding POIs to a map, so we don't have this feature available in every region of the world (yet!). The reasons that affect the launch of the feature in a certain area van vary from technical challenges to local regulations we need to comply but our team is still in full force trying to remove these blockers to make more regions available as we know there's a lot of ground to cover."

In the forum post linked above, Googler @GusMoreira made the following clarification on 20 November 2017, for a very similar issue in Kenya:

"Adding missing roads has a bit more complex system than adding POIs to a map, so we don't have this feature available in every region of the world (yet!). The reasons that affect the launch of the feature in a certain area van vary from technical challenges to local regulations we need to comply but our team is still in full force trying to remove these blockers to make more regions available as we know there's a lot of ground to cover."

great worked for me..

Oneness, Niceness and Positivity!

Using this system, it takes a long time to get a missing pedestrian path to get added in

Anonymous
Not applicable

This possibility is still inaccessible in many countries, for example in my country, Serbia, Europe. There is still no way to correct the roads

Very funny function! Several years ago, Google closed the editing of GoogleMaps in the Republic of Uzbekistan. At that time, the maps were actively edited, but their detailing left much to be desired. Since then, new automobile interchanges have been built in the cities. New wide roads passed along the old residential quarters. New roads were built where there used to be crop fields ... And after that we are offered this ridiculous mechanism for requesting the editing of existing roads?
Hey, Google! Do you know that in Uzbekistan you have no actual maps for a long time? And apparently it will not be for long.
Compare your map of the city of Zhizhzak with Oprenstheemps:
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.1282554,67.8154391,12.79z
http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=13/40.1225/67.8193
Which street should I ask you to edit so you can draw the whole city?

I didnt find this feature in Microsoft edge

@GTM_Nayan

Google does not react to the comments on these blog articles.

They do, however, read posts on their Local Guides Connect website.  I see that you have recently posted the topic, Improving maps by analysing the gps data of the users of GoogleMaps on smartphones in the Feedback and Feature Requests forum.  Google does read that forum and takes ideas from there to the rest of the Google Maps team.

@TraciC@GusMoreira@BruceDM, would it be possible to shut down further comments on this nearly one-year-old blog post?

This feature of requesting edits is so boring. Might as well get back to wikimapia, or continue mapping on open street map and Here map editor (the same that bing and facebook uses)
Level 10
I had more satisfaction when i've contributed actively in google map maker.

Fonctionnalité très attendue à la Martinique également.

Merci

A recommendation for a feature that would be SUPER useful - the ability to mark a temporary road closure or road hazard due to emergency conditions. For example, we had a huge wind storm here, knocking out trees and power. It would be fantastic to be able to see on google maps which roads were temporarily blocked due to a downed tree.

Waze has this feature - allowing people to report immediately a closure. I prefer google maps to waze, but I will switch if needed.

Also, the more GIS-centric information google can provide during these emergency situations, the better. For example, in Virginia, Dominion has a pretty good interactive outages map (http://outagemap.dominionenergy.com.s3.amazonaws.com/external/default.html) - WHICH USES GOOGLE MAPS AS THE BASE MAP - showing exactly where customers are out of power. Why can't you also offer this info on google maps, as an additional filter?  I am sure they must have an API allowing you to pull this data on top of google maps.

Level 5

So, how long has this information been wrong?

Level 8

I am from Bangladesh, Edit map features not show in my region. What can i do now ?Screenshot_2018-03-13-12-50-58-188_com.google.android.apps.maps.pngScreenshot_2018-03-13-12-52-31-133_com.google.android.apps.maps.png

Level 6

I found the feature pretty useless, as no one seems to apply the suggestions. I have tried to bring some wrong and missing roads to attention, but I found all of them to just be ignored - Even over a year later.

Level 3

Full Editing No (முழு எடிட்டிங் இல்லை)

How to draw the boundaries of the listing? Earlier we use to draw using Map marker....
