Edit a road segment on Google Maps for desktop

4/27/17 UPDATE: The ability to edit road segments in Google Maps on Android and iOS is now available to all Google Maps users.

As we announced last November, we’re working to graduate Map Maker functionality into core Google Maps products. We have since released features enabling Local Guides to moderate recent edits to nearby places on Google Maps for Android and on your desktop computer (with an iOS version coming soon). We are focused on continuing to develop great moderation experiences, so stay tuned for new updates throughout the year.

One of the most requested features to bring to Google Maps from Map Maker is the ability to add and edit roads. Today we are launching the first part of a revamped editing flow in Google Maps targeting road segment editing. This first launch features a new selection UI and the ability to report issues on multiple road segments at once on desktop Google Maps (for Level 5 Local Guides) and Google Maps for Android (slowly rolling out to everyone).  

How to edit a road segment:

1. Open Google Maps on your desktop computer OR the Google Maps app for Android
2. Tap = to open the side menu
3. Scroll down to “Send Feedback”
4. Tap “Edit the map”
5. Tap the road segment you want to edit
6. Tap “Next”
7. Suggest the changes for the road you selected (Name, Incorrectly drawn, One-way/two-way, Closed, or Private)
8. Tap Send

      

Look for more announcements in the future, including the ability to report a missing road, report issues on a full route, and further down the line, report more complex attributes like real-time closures and events.

We’re excited to hear your feedback on this first step as we improve the road editing process in Google Maps, working towards our goal of assisting everyone as they navigate the world around them.

Google added a new way to report missing roads. So I would recommend you report the missing items to Google through the feedback process. Click send feedback in the bottom right hand corner and then click report missing road. You will receive an email after you have submitted the report and then another email once the road is added.

One more thing, don't forget when responding to others make sure to tag them (by writing @ before their names) in a post so they can receive notifications that you are communicating with them.

there is no help to be had here. google has taken away a tool that was very useful and it appears no matter how much we beg, they will not be turning it back on. we have moved on to using other maps because of this. asking for an edit one sidewalk at a time is ridiculous for the college i am trying to map.

my recco, start investing your time into someone elses's mapping technology as google has left me with nothing but regrets on how much time i've put into their product.

i write this as a good bye to watching this thread and as a goodbye to my hopes of using google maps to help our students navigate our campus.

Since Corrie's annoucncement on ‎03-08-2017 there is no progress and any new feature for editiong map.  

What is happening here. You have stopped the transfer of features from Map Maker to Maps? There are tons and tons of roads to add, modify or polygons to add. Here I am talking about countries where there is no more local mapping service for decades.

There are dozens of people wanting to help improve the map but they are stuck ..
Give us at least clear information about future changes of tools. Perhaps there is nothing in progress...

Since October, Maps' road editing festure is enhanced in my region.  If those new features do not arrive in yourcregion yet, they might soon.

In my country there is not possibility of editing yet, as shown at your screenshots. Take a look in Mbandaka for exemple you'll notice it. There are only two possibilities : adding places and sharing its opinion on Maps ( and nothing more)

On my last message I was talking about drawing lines and polygons. I'had a very great experience with GMM and I wish to improve DRC's map more.

And it does not move on the side of the Google Maps team (and  that annoys me as many other users I think 🙂 )

 I'm seeing some improvements in Google Maps when it comes to new roads. 

For some reason, last week almost 90% of new roads that were constructed less than a year ago were added to Google Maps.

I'm not sure where Google takes the data from (I'm pretty sure they are not taking the data from Waze). There are also roads that are not shown on satellite imagery but are added to Google Maps too, impressive. 

And editing is disabled where I live, I can't report about anything.

Hi, I'm really missing the feature of actually drawing new or editting existing roads, railroads and water (e.g. ponds, lakes...). Will that ever be possible after MapMaker closure? Some things in the map are still incorrect, somewhere, the situation simply has changed and requires an update.

Unfortunately, this is not available in the Philippines. Tried it a year ago and just tried it today. The feature is still not available. I can't even add a missing road both in Desktop and Mobile and my google map is updated in Android.

Could you please share updates about new plans of roll-out this feature? A lot of people from a lot of countries would like to improve G.Maps, but 'Edit road' still is not available and it cause wrong navigation in some cases.

For example, I'm from Ukraine and can't report places where road is not exist, but G.Maps shows road and vice versa. Regards,

@ABU-AMEER That's not an error.  A "road network problem" indicates to them that you have found an error in the map's road network.  They will review  the edit and will post it once they do.

As you said that is not like a error message or something like that.its just a email sent by computerised .If you received a like that .Then it means the Google maps will review your edit . I thought you understand.

I don't understand why if Waze belongs to Google, they don't simply sync the map data. Waze maps are a lot better tuned and updated than Google Maps, and its map editor is very friendly and easy to use.

@Danonino8a some Waze data is used in Google Maps.

Generally speaking my impression is that they are retained as separate properties with separate user bases and separate data sources. Most Waze map data is crowd sourced. Most Maps data is from official authoritative sources. I've noticed that ideas destined for Maps are sometimes tested in Waze first to see how people take to them (e.g. speed limit display in navigation).

Unfortunately Google is not yet able to offer all features in all areas. When a feature is not available in an area (usually a country) then you will see the message you've encountered.

Google is constantly trying to release more features in more areas, so do check again in the future. For those features that are released in most places, such as adding a road, that normally means the few areas left have a major obstacle preventing the release, such as a legal one.

Sadly, this feature is not available in the Philippines wherein there are too many complaints of false roadway/path where it shouldn't exist online. Third-party and crowd-sourced mapping services are doing much better, and you might consider this to be opened in the Philippines to avert possible legal issues and to increase the quality mapping in relation to the reality.
