Stop requesting to upload very similar looking photos from my phone

Google selects photos to upload from my phone and I often take several very similar shots to make sure I have a good photo. I'm happy posting one of these but is it possible to stop asking to upload the others either by remembering a deselection once one is chosen or using software to check that the requested photos are significantly different from ones I've already uploaded. The requests from Google can come in months later making it too easy to upload similar photos and this doesn't provide a good experience for the viewer.

Thanks @AngieYC I've had a look at your answer. I'm more than happy to upload photos but is there a way that Google can be selective in what it asks for. I go through my photos deleting very similar ones (see photo below). Is it possible that once a photo has been uploaded that Google doesn't then ask for a very similar photo.
