Appealing Edit Rejects

When an edit submitted to the maps is Rejected - there is not always a clear reason for the Reject. I suspect a bot designed with a specific set of criteria - puts your edit through the bot grinder and is unable to use human intuition and "look out the window"*.

I think an appeal button - perhaps only available to X level guides and above - would save a lot of mystery frustration.

Seems to me we put in a lot of work for the joy of making maps fun and informative, and clearly not for the money. Rather than force us to manually request a review in another forum - a lot more work for a volunteer to have to undertake.

*Look out the window = sometimes the weather report doesn't always get it right! Sometimes you just gotta look out the window to confirm a "goofy" prediction of weather.

It is so frustrating when you know Google Maps is incorrect and you submit a change or an addition and it is rejected even though you have provided a clear Photo that shows you are correct in wanting this change.

So I would like to propose a comments box that is not for insertion into Maps but to explain to the reviewer the reasons behind your change or insertion.

As we all spend time and effort doing this and for a rejection with no way to comment when you know its correct is so Frustrating.

Please vote for this if it has happened to you, or just vote to stop it happening 😀

Status changed to: Needs information

Hello @WynLin,

Thank you for your suggestion, however could you please provide some more details?

The problem I think with the edit that we suggest, are right BUTTTT, there is people sometime accidentally press the wrong button, or just click yes or no if he/she thinks the edit is right or wrong.

I've had several rejects based on not enough information given.

For example, a business here in my small town moved from address X to address Y. Same street. I snapped pictures of the sign on the old business indicating the move. And I snapped pictures of the new location. But my edit was rejected.

I suspect the "edit bot" could not process the sign from the business with the move information. It was handwritten and hanging behind a window with muntins. So the sign had wood "lines" # over it.

Allowing an appeal to resubmit the sign to a human for review would probably fix the issue of "proof" since apparently the new pictures of the business was not enough.

Having to resubmit or asking the owner to take ownership of the business - is a lot of work. I find so many out there incredulous that a mistake is a "big deal" or the other bad attitude I observe is a "shrug" and that "a mistake shows the customer a human is behind the webpage." I disagree.

I take a lot of pride in providing accurate details. I'm probably a "perfectionist". So it's really discouraging to see a reject when I have provided sufficient evidence or if nothing else have the experience (level 5, 6, or 7) that should show that I am capable of having the right edit.

I do these changes willing and for free. I hate it when I see glaring mistakes or get wrong information in my own searches.  Ensuring the information is right for everyone is a good feeling; that I'm serving a good purpose. I shouldn't have to work so hard at a correction when the correction only helps not hinders others.

You know, @BorrisS in retrospect, I doubt I need to add additional information. I suspect asking for more details is just postponing the inevitable. If Google believes appealing rejected edits would a useful tool, we would already have an appeal - pending to the reject status we receive. I see this as the ability to make the edits smooth and less frustrating for local guides and an incentive to continue working on Google Maps. Google probably sees it as more work between adding the necessary code and having a live person to review the appeals of a rejected edit.

Feel free to close this request. It's clearly not evident to anyone but me how this benefits. I'm just one person.

Hi @Dr-Yan,

Thank you for sharing your idea.

Please note that a similar one has been already suggested here - Appealing Edit Rejects. For that reason, I will merge yours to it together with the votes your idea has accumulated so far.

I just recommend you before you submit an idea to search the community. It’s possible that someone else has already submitted the same one, so you can show your support by voting for that idea.
