I recently stumbled upon an article in news paper that talked about startups working towards our environment. It caught my attention, because we are used to seeing startups disrupting technology and innovations. 

The article talked about 3 Indian startups working tirelessly towards waste management and recycling stuffs from waste to make it best.  

Nothing is waste and get the best out of waste' is the motto of these three startups - Scarpshala, E - Waste recycler and Anthill creations. From recycling or reusing plastic bottles, rubber tyres, glass bottles to e-wastes, these three companies have tackled waste disposal of all kinds, in their own unique ways. Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, along with open defecation and sanitation, waste management is part of the government's agenda. Members of these companies actually took upon the onus of reducing the burden of wastes on landfills and came up with innovative ideas to recycle garbage.

Below are the snapshots of their Websites through which one can learn more about these initiatives.

The reason I am sharing this information is because a lot of times we responsible citizens feel the urge of doing something about waste management, but never find out right people to speak to and associate. 

Now that we know these 3 startups (there are many more), we can always contact them through their website and do our bit towards conservation of mother earth. 

Likewise, it would be great if Local Guides from different community can highlight such startups / communities working towards waste management and help each other by giving right information. @AriMar this is a highly commendable idea. At our last Lagos Local Guides Forum, the explained to fellow guides on How to identify a green compliant or eco-riendly business or organization. My presentation was titled "Going Green with Google Maps". Organizations that use solar energy can also be give a green mark  ♳♴♵♶♷⛫ especially in Nigeria where fossil powered generators are common. 

I want to commend an organization promoting eco-riendly beach in Nigeria. The Kids Beach Gardens in  Lagos hosted the #WorldOcean event today and invited Local Guides to make a presentation. Joy and I represented local guides and have highlights about the programme. We mentioned #LocalGuidesCleanUpTheWorld programme and how we use maps to improve environmental related information.

One wonderful strategy the beach managers use is this- kids  are allowed but adults are encouraged to adopt a tree in order to have free access for 3months, 6months or 12months. The funds are paid into a Children's Mental Health Initiative.

They have planted over 100 coconut trees and have 500 in nurser. This beach is certified as the only eco-friendly beach in West Africa.

I was impressed by their social entrepreneurship programme. They support nature while improve the lives of children. A double badge!

@EmekaUlor  Thank you for sharing your idea about giving Eco-Friendly and Environmental conservationist businesses a Green Badge. 

This Green Badge can only be given to businesses that clearly demonstrate the practice:

Restaurants which can prove they source 85+% local organic ingredients.

Businesses which can demonstrate Green Practices.

Governments which legislate and enforce water quality, clean rivers, have education committees promoting eco-friendly human footprints, etc. 

LGs can monitor their local businesses for legitimacy.

@EmekaUlor  I recommend that you post your Green Strategy on the Feedback & Feature Requests.

One is passion projects for not only his country is to build a volunteer organization to plant trees and shrubs and have them be tracked using Google Maps, in particular MyMaps to help keep our plant green.
