There has been quite a lot of discussion on reviews not being posted on Maps and here is yet another example. As you can see in the reason given for why the review isn’t posted, there wasn’t necessarily an issue with my content, it’s just that the place was removed from Google Maps. I of course don’t know why such a beautiful park was removed but that’s not the point of my post here…
What interests me is the closing paragraph in the What you can do section of the Google Maps email. The advice given here is that no action is needed on my part and if the place is restored to Google services, my content and I guess this means not only the review but also the photos attached to it, will be restored automatically. However, I have a question:
What would you do in this case? Would you leave your review and photos on Maps in the Unknown place hence hidden category in the chance that the place would one day be restored to Google services or would you delete your review and photos? Please also explain why in the comments below.
I would take no action and just leave the review and photos in the hope that one day the place would be restored to Google services.
I would delete the review and photos so as to reduce the count of hidden reviews and photos on my Maps profile.
I would lodge an appeal for this and try to have the place reinstated on maps.
Adam, interesting situation. I’d remove them more because no one will never see them rather than a concern about my hidden reviews. I have never received this notice but I have found a few pictures that were unattached to any poi, when they had been originally.
I don’t do many Reviews so haven’t seen this. My current problem is with videos. When i upload them i see the 7 points pop up on the screen, but when i check later the video is not listed. Posting it agan the next day is usually successful.
So Al are you saying that you believe that there’s no chance that the place would one day be restored to Google services as mentioned in Google’s email message?
I also can’t say that I’ve ever received this notice before but while there’s no indication given why the place was removed from Google Maps, I’m sure that you will agree that it’s nice that Google is letting us know that it has been removed and thus the review isn’t posted.
Now that’s a strange one Anthony! I’m the reverse of you, I don’t do many videos so haven’t seen your issue and I would have thought that your re-submitting the next day runs the risk of a duplicated contribution.
Good question, @AdamGT .
I have a question for you too: where is the place located? Inside or outside the EU?
I’m asking because I have received that message several times, always for locations in the EU.
What I did was to write a post here in Connect, for a Googler to take action. All the famous historical landmarks that I reported were reinstated, and the same happened to @PattyBlack too.
IMHO it’s too easy to remove some kind of locations, and Google Maps should implement a different type of verification before to remove them.
That’s why I consider that email extremely important: because in this way I can act.
And of course I hope this type of information is sent worldwide to the local guides. Hence my question
Yes Adam, I’m aware of that risk. That’s why I wait a day (or two) before resubmitting. My hope is that I’d see the duplicate before the system sees it.
@AdamGT I had the same experience as @ErmesT in at least two cases where a post on Connect did help.
In one case, a historical monument was deleted and after intervention, the review and all photos were reinstated. Not sure, but I believe, it took only a couple of days.
In another case a monument was changed to a geographic feature and my photos were suddenly “homeless”. Also here, a post on Connect did help.
I also noticed about 8 to 10 of my photos became hidden long after posting, one after another during several weeks without any noticeable reason. Interestingly, those were all of different listings, each of those places still showing other photos of mine. Several weeks after submitting the appeal form, all photos reappeared at once.
However, having said that, if a photo gets hidden immediately after uploading, I delete it right away and post different one (usually, I have more “In reserve”). But I don’t remember, when this happened the last time.
This is what I would do:
I strongly have the feeling that the review was written mainly by AI.
If you check action 1, it would suppose that Google’s moderation is (currently) wrong.
Action 2: who cares about the count ? It’s about trying to give useful info for potential visitors, so they can make up their mind.
Action 3 : let’s stay humble and write a real review.
Best solution: rewrite the review, use other words, reframe it. Use another device to post it (desktop vs mobile). Post the photo apart from the review. Log in from your usual IP address that sends a trust signal to Google. If you really think it’s supe important for humanity, foreward it to someone else and ask kindly to post it by using their account (who cares about your counts ?? com’on).
Or just accept it and chill. Google is far from perfect.
I was thinking about business poi’s, not something like your park. Yes, I do think they might add it back. I I wonder how the choice of removal versus marking it permanently closed was made? I recently found a small Veterans Memorial that was marked permanently closed but had not been removed.
As you will know, there are a number of John F. Kennedy memorial parks around the world and this beautiful one is located in Cobh, Ireland so yes I do understand that this place is inside the EU. To me, it’s really a shame that this place has been removed. It truly is a beautiful memorial (see added picture) to JFK. Cobh is a small but beautiful seaside town on Great Island in Cork Harbour, County Cork, Southwest of Ireland.
Thank you @AdamGT
So let’s try to work to recover it.
When did you receive the email?
If it was yesterday you may be able to see the place on Google Maps (it may takes a few days before to completely disappear). If you can see it please share the link here.
Having the original link is the best way for the team to restore it.
If not, please share the link to the position of the park on Google Maps, and the URL of your photos (you will need to be on desktop to get it)
I’m tagging here @DeniGu for escalating it to the team
I do have similar cases of hidden or unposted reviews @AdamGT , although not because the place was removed from Google Maps. I don’t know why either but I will definitely keep the reviews as well as photos and videos I’ve uploaded. It’s been a hard work to have them there!
@AdamGT
Wie heißt es so schön, " die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt".
Ich habe diese Meldung schon gesehen, aber noch nie erlebt, dass etwas wieder hergestellt wurde.
Thanks for your detailed explanation of your cases and how you handled them @WilfriedB. To be totally honest, because of the time I spend on my contributions on Connect, I just don’t have the time to sort out such issues however they are interesting and certainly how you and Local Guys generally sort these issues out is of interest to many.
Thanks for our comment and thoughts on this @Kurt2day
No, the review wasn’t mainly written by AI. If you have a closer look at the review you will see that the review was written 5 years ago (see screenshot below), well before the general availability of AI. See also my closing comment in reply.
Your suggestion to rewrite the review, use other words, reframe it etc implies that the problem is with the wording of the review however, if you closely read the reasons why the review isn’t posted you will see that the review couldn’t be published because the place was removed from Google Maps, hence nothing to do with the words!
Yes my case is not a business. It’s a memorial park, one of several JFK memorials around the world. This one having been removed makes me wonder if the others around the world will also be removed or is this a special case for the reasons suggested by @ErmesT as this one is in the EU!!
For this, do you think that the best course of action would be to lodge an appeal (Option #1) or just sit as one day it would be restored to Google services (Option #2)?
Yes interesting question however in my case, Google’s email clearly indicates that the POI was removed from Maps.
