World Photography Day 2025 - Celebrating Google Maps Local Guides

Tuesday, August 19th, 2025 is World Photography Day — a global celebration of the art, craft, science, and history of photography. It’s the perfect day to pause, reflect, and appreciate the power of images to connect people, tell stories, and preserve memories.

But here’s the fun part: for over 10 years now, Google Maps Local Guides have been doing exactly that — sharing their photos with the world! From hidden cafés to famous landmarks, from mountain trails to city streets, Local Guides capture it all and make it available to millions (sometimes billions!) of people who rely on Maps to explore, discover and make informed decisions about the places to visit and the meals to have. Every photo makes someone’s journey or decision a little easier, a little more inspiring.

:sparkles: That’s right… photography + Maps = impact!
Every photo you add doesn’t just tell a story — it makes someone’s journey a little easier, a little more inspiring. It helps someone find their way, choose their next adventure, or even remember a place they loved.

So let’s celebrate World Photography Day 2025 together. The theme for this year’s World Photography Day is “MY FAVORITE PHOTO” so let’s all dovetail into this theme. In the following order and format shown in the image below:

  1. Of all the photos you have added to Maps so far in 2025, in the comments below share the photo you love most.
  2. Tell us the story behind your photo
  3. Share the Maps link to your photo, and
  4. Add the hashtags #WorldPhotographyDay and #WorldPhotographyDay2025

Let’s together turn this thread into a gallery of local heroes making a global impact :tada:

📈 Local Guides: The 1B+ Views Club

And speaking of impact…the impact of Local Guides’ photography on Google Maps is staggering. The table below shows the Local Guides who’ve each surpassed 1 billion photo views as of July 30th, 2025. Think about that for a moment — a billion times someone has looked at their photo to make a decision, learn something new, or simply be inspired. That’s next-level community contribution and deserves a massive :clap::clap:.

But here’s the exciting part: looking at the above table and comparing it with that as at 30 July 2024 (see Google Maps Local Guides and World Photography Day (2024)), we see that in just one year, the numbers have skyrocketed.

These numbers remind us: every photo we contribute — no matter how small — helps shape how millions of people explore the world.

🙌 Hats Off to Local Guides Everywhere

To all Local Guides: whether your photos have 1,000 views or 1 billion, you’re making an impact. You’re helping travelers, neighbors, and communities connect with the world around them so on this forthcoming World Photography Day 2025, take a moment to reflect on your work and be proud of the role you play in making Maps such a vibrant, useful, and inspiring space.

Congratulations to all our amazing Local Guides — you are the true local heroes!

✨ Happy World Photography Day 2025! ✨

:camera_with_flash: So now it’s over to you. Of all the photos you have added to Maps so far in 2025, in the comments below share the photo you love most and describe why you love it. Oh and don’t forget to tag it with #WorldPhotographyDay2025 and #WorldPhotographyDay. You can see how I’ve done it here.

Try to keep it simple, less is more! Just add your photo (making sure it’s a photo you added to Maps in 2025), your description, and the #WorldPhotographyDay and #WorldPhotographyDay2025 tags. There’s a reason why I’m asking you to follow this simple approach.

We all can’t wait to see your photo and read the story behind it

Shown above is a photo I added to Maps in January, 2025 and I chose this photo as the photo I love most of those taken so far in 2025 not because it has the most views, but because it reminds me of a fantastic night out we had with friends when seeing the amazing tribute musical to Tina Turner at the Princess Theatre. A magnificently restored historical landmark in Melbourne, Australia. You can see more of my photos together with my review here.

Wow @AdamGT What an amazing way to celebrate World Photograph Day. It’s true that the impact of photos uploaded by Local Guides are phenomenal. Helping millions of people to find what they’re looking for and helping Local businesses get more customers.

This #WorldPhotographyDay sharing my favourite photo of 2025, captured at the historic Ram Bagh in Agra.

Reason for this being my favourite photo is that it’s my first instance of capturing a clear view of a sunset, without even expecting it.

This is MY FAVORITE PHOTO, a Pizza Hut at CMR Mall, Vizag. I added to Maps in March 2025, and it’s my favorite of all the photos I’ve taken so far this year (2025)—not because it has the most views, I like it the most because the colours came out so vibrant and it captures the lively feeling of the place.

Awesome idea @AdamGT!

The hardest part about this challenge is picking just one photo!

In a past life I was extremely lucky and got a gig taking photos for a local radio station for big concerts. I don’t know if it found me or I found it but it came at the right time when I was trying to find myself. Being able to explore my creativity while being surrounded by creatives was transformational. I really, really miss it.

Since that time I’ve sadly had to grow up. I don’t get the opportunities to take photos as much as I once did. However, being a local guide has helped occasionally scratch that itch!

But I still venture out with my wife to concerts. Those experiences bring me back and as cliché as it sounds, makes me feel free and young again.

My favorite photo so far for 2025 is from a concert we went to where Vandelux vandeluxmusic.com was performing. I always enjoy hearing the opening bands because sometimes they put on a better performance than the headliner. This concert was one of those times. It was so good we just purchased tickets to see him again, this time as the headliner.

It’s not my best aesthetic photo from 2025 that will impress everyone, but it’s the best photo that resonates with me. Sometimes, I prefer my photos that way.

@AdamGT
I am posting a photo which I am the most proud of due to a crazy back story.

So, I heard about this hindu temple, but had never been. I was recovering from brain surgery, and it was my first time driving my car. I decided to pick up food through a fast food place, then drive by this temple. I was wearing only my pajamas and an old white undershirt. I had no plans to get out of my car.

As i passed by the temple, they had a guard station with security, so i thought i would drive up and ask some questions. Guard said it took over 10 years to build, and, i could go in. I told him what i was wearing and he said as long as i had shoes and shirt. I could not walk well yet due to the surgery. I said, you only live once, so off i went into this temple in my pj’s and took this shot.

I believe Jan, 2025, of Baps Shri Temple, in Chino Hills.

It’ll Do Club, Dallas, Texas (LG: @SamanthaSheehy)

Shown above is a photo I added to Maps in August of 2025 at the It’ll Do Club in Dallas, TX. I chose this as my favorite photo of the year because it commemorates a special trip my boyfriend and I made out to Texas from Boston for my birthday.

Hot Chip is my absolute favorite band EVER - an electronic/synth-pop group from London. I’ve seen them live over 10 times, but they took an extended break from touring back in 2000, especially here in the US.

When I read on Reddit they were touring again, and in particular coming to only three clubs in the US, I immediately booked plane tickets and a fancy hotel out in Dallas, for one of the best 3-day weekends I’ve ever had!

You can see more of my blurry photos and silly videos from that evening here

Here’s my favorite photo so far: This photo was taken in downtown Cobourg Beach—you can see my review of the place here ( https://maps.app.goo.gl/gzqauCXRqCAJP8N97)
I really like it because it showcases diversity and respect, along with the majestic old architecture and all the touristy side.

A rainy day in a tropical area, where everyone is enjoying the weekend. The walk through the lush green trail to reach the waterfall was refreshing, and the joy of spending time with my cousins made it even more special. From the top view of Haritheerthakkara Waterfall, I could see the pure water flowing and people soaking in happiness as they enjoyed the moment. This memory, filled with greenery, laughter, and togetherness, will always remain in my memories.

Obviously, This is my image for #WorldPhotographyDay

I didn’t choose the one with most views, but a more original one[1] (I think), where Totò watches me in the homonymous café in Wiesbaden-Biebrich, Germany.

We found this place only accidentally after visiting the castle. I did choose a different one for breakfast in an unknown city, but didn’t watch the map while walking.

If I remember correctly, my photo was the cover picture of the place for a while, but not anymore.
