Hello, Local Guides!
Continuing our Women & Allied Series, today we’re excited to introduce Aleena, a passionate Level 6 Local Guide from India.
Aleena has been making an impact by contributing to Google Maps, sharing her experiences, and supporting her community in meaningful ways. Let’s get to know her! Here is a candid Rendezvous with @aleena1 !
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your journey as a Local Guide?
[Aleena]: I am a photographer and a writer. I love writing ground stories, all about people and their lives. I am just a normal woman, trying my best to go beyond the barriers set for woman. Just trying to make the world a better place.
What inspires you to be a Local Guide?
[Aleena]: Well, being a woman, a photographer, writer and traveller, LG just seemed to be in my path. I have also added reviews, called out people for their worst actions and thanked them for being kind. Being a woman, I look for woman-safe places, clean bathroom, availability of sanitary napkins, accessibility for differently abled, gender neutral bathrooms etc. I also highlight woman owned businesses.
What’s your favorite feature of Google Maps?
[Aleena]: I usually use the traffic feature to check for traffic. Then also the lists! The lists are absolute gold. I have curated places that I am familiar with as the must visits and whenever friends or their friends visit the place they ask me about it. I send them the lists.
What message would you give to other Women Local Guides or anyone considering joining our Local Guides program ?
[Aleena]: Well, the society has told women this is the way you should think, speak, dress or feel. But, women is so much more than that. And to go beyond that requires breaking a lot of rules and traditional constructions. I have derived great inspiration from a lot of women. When I see a women excel, going to the space, stading tall in the parliament or at the cricket field, I feel proud. I just hope women stay strong and fight for themselves and ensure that the glass ceiling is broken everywhere for the rest of them.
