Winter in the Mitten State #MichiganYearAround

In this opportunity, I would like to introduce Michigan in the Winter season, lets’s get started.

Hello Winter :snowflake:

Caption: collage photos of winter activities

For being a 4-season state, Michigan has a total of not quite equal months for each season. As soon as you get adjusted to one season the next one is just around the corner. Do not be surprised if you hear the phrase Michigan weather is bipolar, can’t make up its mind every hour it changes. It is safe to bring a jacket wherever you go if it’s too hot you can take your layers off but if it is too cold it can be dangerous, this is a piece of experienced advice. Remember we are on the great lakes.

Michigan has two peninsulas, upper and lower, A peninsula is surrounded by water on 3 sides. the further North you go the colder it is. The temperature differences can be +or- 30 Fahrenheit between the lower and the upper peninsula.

Winter starts from December 21 through March 19 but It also to happens to snow in May! The season can be very tricky it does not always stick to the schedule. Sometimes it snows in November. We all wish for is what we call white Christmas.

Beginning of November the wind is still very strong it can bring the temperature from 50 F to 30 F (which is below zero in Celsius). Prior to winter there is Fall where the temperature gradually changes getting colder and colder giving our body and mind to adjust and to prepare for the winter coldness. Believe it or not many people got depressed during winter time due to lack of sunshine.

Winter can be so harsh in Michigan couple of years back everything turned to be ice we were like icicles for about 4 days. The branches, the road, the leaves all become solid ice. Driving is very dangerous in this situation, especially the black ice that can happen when snow turns to rain and temperature drop makes any water turn to solid ice.

What we do during winter! You think we would stay inside the house, but NO! When the fresh snow covers the ground children with the proper outfit can play outside doing many things: like making an igloo :rice_ball: , a snow angel by laying on the fresh snow and moving your arms and legs like touching each other, we enjoy making snowman :snowman_with_snow: with a carrot nose, climb up a big hill and sled down :snowboarder: . Those are activities for all ages. What about the adults? We like winter camping :tent: , ice fishing :fishing_pole_and_fish: , bonfires b :fire_engine: , just to name a few. Just because it snows, let nothing stop you from having fun, just be creative!

When you are out in the cold think about the warmth of hot cocoa or the smell of chilli, yummm!!! These some of the winter traditions for most parents especially with young ones.

The next season we will talk about Spring it starts in March 20and lasts until to June 20, April showers bring May flowers is a saying we say here. Summer runs from June 21 to September 22. And Autumn or Fall lasts from September 22 to December 21.

I encourage other Local Guides who experience the cold weather, PLEASE share photos of the ice or snow with a short explanation of the place!!! Tell us the story of your winter activities, meals, or any other things that other colder area has no clue about. Be inspirational so others in another part of the world will be able to enjoy the beauty of it.

Thank you in advance for your participation till the next season, Spring!

Hello dear friend @Erna_LaBeau

Great post - a lot of interesting information - Thanks.

See… though I have been to many snowy countries, I haven’t experienced it for the past 6 years.

So, I was really eager to feel your nice post - got refreshed with a few memories!

Thanks… for sharing.

Well, in South India, we do not have much opportunity to see Snow Fall! (Of course, there are a few hill stations).

Hope to add some photos soon.

Regards…

In my area we four seasons too, @Erna_LaBeau , even if a bit different from yours, less extreme, I can say.

In the past I wanted to explore “the four season too” with a couple of post:

No snow here, we have to move an hour north in the Alps to have snow. We have fog here, for sure less extreme, even if I am sure that @PattyBlack will disagree: “Nebbia in Val Padana” - Water Jewels in the Land of Fog

Waoo… interesting post and more over activities are icing on cake… above all ice fishing looks amazing. Well extreme weather at times looks so good but on the other hand it’s equally harsh to live for months. My recent experience was at Auli -6degree. Since its very cold we keep drinking soup, coffee and so on to keep up :grinning: once again thank you @Erna_LaBeau Mam for sharing winter life in Michigan. Stay warm and healthy

I remembered couple years back we had ice covered everything for almost 4 days the first and second day we were off work and back to work on the third day actually it was the worst day I have got it recorded HERE

I love snow very much and hate the cold, how about you, Patty?

The day after the snow storm is always gorgeous too or when the temperature drops the snow turns to ice that’s my fav moment.

Please stay warm!!!

@Erna_LaBeau yes, I like the snow, I like to sink my feet when it’s high and soft, and I love to walk when it snows because the sounds totally change, everything seems to be slower, even the hours! The landscapes change when it stops snowing, everything seems to crystallize  But like you I don’t love the cold! Here the temperatures changed very quickly, yesterday it felt like spring, today we have strong winds, but the wind makes me nervous  Stay warm too!
