Winter Fruit Power: পানিফল/water fruit

I am very much amazed to see the nice post on Watermelon by @user_not_found , on pineapple and watermelon by @SholaIB , Milk Fruit of Cambodia by @Sophia_Cambodia , and Fruit Store by @Manatee All of them have written in a very nice way with so many stunning photos that I could not wait to write my post on December’s #Monthlytopic Fruit Power initiated by @HiroyukiTakisawa .

Before winter Bangladesh faces a flood every year and we do not have enough chance to get many fruits during this time. Normally, winter in Bangladesh is famous for various kinds of vegetables. We have many fruits during the summer. You can read my recap post on Virtual Taste of Summer Fruits where I have tried to present various kinds of summer fruits in Bangladesh. During winter we mainly depend on imported fruits. I will write on two of them in the latter part of the post. First I will write about one of our local fruits that are found during winter. The name of it is Pani Fal or Water Fruits (Water Caltrop).

Before winter, as we have a flood in Bangladesh, so this fruit grows during a flood in the open flooded water and we can eat them at the end of the flood. During my childhood, I have seen my uncle cultivate this in his pond. After many years I have not seen it. When I took a bath in my uncle’s pond I ate some very secretly :grinning: :grinning: . Very recently I saw it bought it to give a surprise to my daughter. She was really surprised to see this fruit as it was really new to her and she liked the peculiar Triangle shape of this fruit also. The skin of this is little hard outside but the white inside is very soft and juicy. Thanks to Hiroyukitakisawa to choose this topic for this month.

As we depend on imported fruit during the winter, Apple is one of the fruits that I eat every day during this winter. Every day I eat at least one apple. I love to eat the green color apple though I do not know the exact species of it as we do not grow apple in our country. To write about the Fruit power I must write about it. I do not know when, you people, eat an apple. I am curious to know.

Another fruit that I want to keep on my Fruit Power list is Orange. This is also a common fruit during this time. This is also helpful to provide us sufficient Vitamin C during this time. Though Orange is cultivated in our country, the most quantity is imported from other countries. We try to eat this fruit every day.

Dear @MukulR vai, again one of your superb post. Your all photos are simply amazing.

Now come about Pani Fol, Its our local fruit, many people eat this fruit in our country. But who we lives in Dhaka, its rare to eat this Pani fol because its quiet tough to get this fruit.

On the other hand Apple and Orange, very much common fruit in our country, most of the people eat these fruit.

Thanks vai for your post.

Take love from Old Dhaka ( Gandaria)

Wow @MukulR

A well written post and good pictures attached. These are fruits you don’t see in west Africa. Thank you for sharing it with us on connect.

It’s quite commendable how the flood in Bangladesh is a useful thing for the planting of the different crops and fruits. The orange looks nice,at least in the picture.

Cheers

Thanks for your nice comments @sweetnovember99 . Yes, you are absolutely right people in the cities of Bangladesh do not have enough chance to this fruit very often. Moreover, you cannot see this fruit in all the villages also as they were in the past. It is becoming more and more rare. Thanks for your nice comments one more time. Stay well. Regards.

Hello, @MukulR That’s the first time I heard Pani Fal. It looks a bit strange but interesting. I googled it but I couldn’t find the detail in Japanese. Umm, interesting! I noted down it in case when I find it someday. Thank you for sharing!

BTW, in this winter, I’m eating apple almost every day :apple: I love Fuji apple in Japan.

I have seen them in Cambodia too but only the fruit or tube, not the plant itself @MukulR our local name is ក្រចាប់ read as Krochab.

I have never tasted them but I think it is like chestnut. It must provide so much protein.

Thanks for your nice comments and appreciation @SholaIB . You need still water for 2 -3 months to grow this. I think west African countries do not have months long flood as we have in Bangladesh. But you can grow them in the pond. Thanks for liking the photos. Regards.

I think @Austinelewex will like to read this post.

What a great post @MukulR

I am Happy you tagged me to this awesome post. Here in Nigeria, we do not have the first fruit like @SholaIB said in his comment. The second fruit which is apple is also imported here from south Africa and Europe. Actually Orange which was a seasonal fruit is now an all year round fruit here in Nigeria including watermelon and garden egg (eggplant). Thank you for sharing this amazing post with us here on connect.

Best regards

Thanks for the response @Austinelewex and @MukulR I love to eat apples an hour or so before a meal and maybe 2 hours after a meal if it’s after. They could be quite expensive here really.

I have another question here, what you have in the post resembles a Tangerine rather than an orange??? Please clarify it. Thanks

I guess the weather in Japan is not suitable for this. You may not get it in Europe also. This is warm weather fruit I think @HiroyukiTakisawa If you visit east Asia or south Asia you may get the chance to have the taste of this. Thanks for the info on the Fuji Apple. I also eat apples every day during winter. Regards

Hello @OlgaKlimchik is Pani Fal (Water fruit) found in Belarus or Europe?
