Why I love to share pictures of churches if I am not religious

Although I have never been catholic I got a kind of crush on churches from several years ago. Taking pictures to architecture and landscape is for me one of the best ways to express myself through photography. Since I started my Audiovisual Communication bachelor, I begun to acknowledge photography in a serious way and that’s when I found that I liked to compose images of churches.

Without any doubt churches are icons wherever you go, at least in Colombia where the Catholicism faith is still so strong between our communities. I have to confess that I do not visit churches because of the religious program that they could have but because of the design of the buildings, lightning, echo, and the ambience in general. Some churches are really big and towering, others are colorful but smaller, several churches could be with an old and stone or wood aesthetic, that’s why I like churches because of the diversity you can recognize.

If you are also a churches lover it would be great to share some info about the specific things you like to photograph outside and inside a temple. I personally like to detail domes, geometric recurrent lines and wide angles from the outside.

Wether you are exploring big cities or small towns you are the most of times able to find churches, they are like architecture simbols. In colombia every one of the 1100 municipalities we have in our country has at least one church near the main plaza, that’s why there’s no excuse to start the churches collection.

If you decide to become a collector, keep in mind that your image composition and point of view allws you to highlight the special details, think before you shoot what is what you want to capture the most, architecture design, events inside the church, icons of the believes, particular elements, etc. You can definitely take your camera of mobile, walk some blocks and start your churches colecction now and also contribute on Google Maps so other people can get inspired by the content and keep then in mind as future places to explore.

To summarize, wether you’re exploring small towns or big cities you can always find interesting buildings to capture and start your own churches colecction. Keep in mind that your angle and point of view is what allow you to create an unique idea of what you see or want to see in detail.
