What does the Local Guides Program mean to me? Supporting to Sustain

He who doesn’t travel thinks it is only his mum who cooks best

The world is like a vineyard with hearts as grapes. Each one makes the other and in an ever-evolving world it is very important that we use every platform given to us to enable, to enrich and to grow those around us. I have seen as Kenyans bloom from hard economic times, terror attacks and rise from the ashes because of the support of one another.

As a celebrity who is mostly booked to perform in most of the spaces in Kenya as a singer or event host, I use that celebrity to share my memories as a local guide so as to render agency to the places I visit and to show my commitment in supporting spaces owned by Kenyans but most importantly, these spaces employ Kenyans who have families to feed and support. By highlighting them I know I make a difference in their turnover and so being a local guide is not just a map for anyone interested in me, but also shaping destiny for these business and families that need my support the most

As a radio presenter, I use maps 8 times a day Monday to Friday on my drive show on Kenya’s biggest media network to inform my listeners what roads to use and avoid as well as inform local traffic authorities to help ease traffic. This has brought about a unique twist that allows me to advise my listeners who are stuck in traffic to use alternative routes but also try out local businesses instead of staying in traffic. I argue that instead of sitting in traffic doing nothing try the local restaurant and this way you don’t have to get home tired and hungry whole you should have picked up some dinner and relaxed while at the local eatery that I suggest online.

This and other efforts to support local businesses lead me to be the first Kentan artiste to have a restaurant named after then, further cementing my commitment to supporting businesses that support local families to be sustainable in the long run largely due to local support and commitment.

On a more personal level, after having taught preschool for more than 25 years, my mother retired and opened her own school Fairvale Junior School which I added on Google Maps and as a result, thanks to constant, consistent, content posted on there, I have helped my mother drive the school’s narrative and grown it

from 17 students to more than 200, 4 years later. This is the power of being a local guide. The power that can completely turn around the lives of those around our community, our families and allow many more to prosper from our efforts.
