This is a unique sundial in that unlike most other sundials in Delhi that normally installed on a horizontal platform this is wall-mounted like a wall-clock.
Located inside the Garden of Five Senses opposite Qutub Minar off the Mehrauli-Badarpur road, it is on the eastern side of the garden. On entering the main gate of the garden, proceed towards the left side and on way to the toilets/washrooms.
The sundial can be seen mounted on a wall on the left side-lying in neglect as grass and creepers are growing all over the place. The sundial itself and the wall are in good condition though.
Another special feature about the sundial that I noted was the numbers were written in the Devnagari देवनागरी script that appears like १,२,३,४,५,६,७,८९,०
Have you come across a common object with an interesting twist? I’d be interested in knowing your experience.
Ramp access. A wheelchair-accessible Entrance. A wheelchair-accessible Restroom/Toilet. A wheelchair-accessible Seating. A wheelchair-accessible Parking.
What Else To Do In Delhi
While you are in Delhi, these are the top-recommended places:
A sundial can also tell time accurately throughout the year.
You can read the Wikipedia article to know how we can achieve that.
However, local time at every place differs from the standard time. Every one-degree difference in longitude creates a deviation of four minutes.
We define local noon when the sun is overhead exactly.
However, we follow the longitude passing through Allahabad for IST. That brings sun overhead at 18 minutes past twelve in Delhi. We must take that difference into account to match with our standard time.
that’s very special sundial indeed, interesting to read about those special installations, I like also the note about the numbers. I’ve mostly found always common vertical sundials.
Another special thing about the sundial that I perhaps left out mentioning is the location of the gnomon or the triangular portion that casts the shadow is located on one side of the dial, unlike most common sundials where it is at the center.
Beautiful post @TusharSuradkar , thanks for sharing this detailed post on sundial. I’m happy to see that they use devnagari which is one of the oldest lipi on earth.
