Under categories there are two options skate shop and skateboard shop are they both the same?

I’m asking because I am trying to edit the category of a local skate shop / skateboard shop I go to since its current category is listed under sporting goods which isn’t very accurate.

Hi @Nicodemous55

Could Skate shop be the kind of skates you use on ice?

We really need a set of notes explaining the different categories.

Cheers

Hello @Nicodemous55

That’s an interesting query.

However, if the shop is catering only to skating or skateboarding related stuff, then only the change of category would be relevant. Else, a sporting goods shop would remain the correct description.

Nevertheless, skating can refer to ice skating as well as rollerblading. However, skateboarding will not include ice skating.

In this way, if the shop provides equipment for both ice as well as rollerblading, then skate shop would be the most appropriate classification. If not, then skateboarding would be the right one.

When it comes to categories on Google Maps @Nicodemous55 the situation is close to dramatic.I’m trying make some sense of it (and at the same time encourage Google to provide some guidance in this domain) in the series of posts called Categories Explained (?).

About your specific question: one of the methods I use to determine what is meant with a term is to check the ways in which it has been translated into other languages. Unfortunately that is not very helpful in this case:

  • for the category Skate shop - from the 14 languages I monitor - 6 have the word ‘Skateboard’ in them and 4 the word ‘Skate’
  • the category Skateboard shop is not available in 6 of the 14 languages

My suggestion: use Skate shop as that one seems to be available in all languages.

I was asking because skateboards usually refer to skateboard shops as simply skate shops but I see your point no that you mention it!

I think @C_T answer is the most generally applicable solution to my questions as the area is are a vast majority English-speaking and most reference the location as a skate shop but they only sell skateboarding items. Though @JanVanHaver method is sound and would be better for more diverse areas.

I like to share about myself and some business, and I’m a professional skateboarder.
