Two historic places disappeared suddenly and photos now linked to "Unknown place"

This morning, I noticed that two places which did exist on Maps until yesterday, disappeared and photo show “Unknown place” now:

I tried to search both places by name and the map opens at the correct place, but the pins cannot be opened:

@DeniGu can you help here? Thank you!

:scream:, This is a brutal action, @WilfriedB
Teatro Menotti is a place carved in my mind, that I was visiting frequently when I was working on a dance group.
I tried to search it too. I can’t open it but I can get the link.
Hope the team can retrieve it quickly.
I think you should also share the same information on the Google Maps help Community

@WilfriedB
It’s so sad to see such places disappear from GMaps; perhaps they were removed during AI filtering. Please check again after a few days—the POI might appear, as I mentioned earlier here.

Hi @WilfriedB,

Thank you for the tag! I saw that the team over at the Google Maps forum has been notified about this. Hopefully there will be a positive resolution. :crossed_fingers:

As @ErmesT said earlier, it’s good to flag missing locations in the Google Maps Help community, since fixing Maps data issues is one of their priorities. Thanks a lot for your understanding.

Nope, @PrasadVR
This is a different issue: the two places were removed from Google Maps, hence the reviews disappeared and, obviously, the photo appears now as related to an unknown place.
Your issue most probably, as mentioned also by @DeniGu in your post,

In addition, if you wrote a review about a place located in the EU, when the place is removed from Google Maps, you also receive an email to inform you.

I appreciate the clarification @ErmesT

Did you check your email for any… well updates?

Hello @nvg_localg, thank you for asking.

As far as I know, there won’t be any mail. However, I track all my photos and until now, they still show “Unknown place”. Anyway, I don’t expect any quick solution according to similar cases in the past.

Ah! Ok. because in some times they send updates.

I just noticed a difference compared to this morning:

The place “Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti” is back! For now, my three photos do not link to “unkown” anymore, but to the theater again. However, for now they show the famous triangle “could not be published”:

I assume, this is just a matter of synchronizing all servers and I will wait a couple of days, watching what happens.

This is a great news, @WilfriedB :tada:
Are the photos attached to a review?
If so, I guess you may need a bit more time, let’s see what happens in a couple of days

No, I never wrote a review for either place, since we never visited inside,

It’s good your photos are appearing now at correct POI. Yes, let wait and watch the progress. It’s a new learning :blush: @WilfriedB

@PrasadVR and @ErmesT

Not a matter of “days”, but just overnight Chiostro di San Domenico is also back and the other photos are linked to Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti again, but still hidden. I am confident, that will be solved too.

What puzzles me, is the fact the photos of Chiostro di San Domenic were never hidden, but those of Teatro immediately after the place disappeared became hidden and marked in My Contributions and still are hidden now :thinking:

I agree with you. I have also seen the same thing. Some photos and videos remain visible in incognito mode, even when the place is marked as an ‘Unknown place’, but some media are hidden, along the POI is marked as an ‘Unknown place’. It’s confusing.

Now the (hopefully) final update @ErmesT @PrasadVR and @DeniGu

  • After my three photos of Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti were still hidden a week after the place pin was reinstated, I submitted the appeal form and discovered this morning, they are public again.
  • Besides mine, all(?) photos of other users and 3 reviews show up on the listing now. However, (as usual :pensive_face: ) many don’t show the place, Even the banner is absolutely wrong showing a hotel room. I reported it as “not showing this place” and immediately disappeared from the “All”, but is still the banner. After this partial success, I reported many photos showing different places in the same city (Ermes, if you have time, you might check it too) or even 20 km away from Spoleto or a statue in Pompeji, several hundreds of kilometers away. Unfortunately, I was never successful in the past by doing so.

I am glad to see that your efforts have successfully restored public now.
