Wow, it’s been fascinating to see how traditional snacks have really made a comeback, especially after the COVID era!
Remember those school birthday parties where chocolates were the go-to treat? Well, many schools now encourage distributing healthier, traditional options like peanut candy (kadalai mittai) and Chikki instead, and I absolutely love it!
If you’re ever in Madurai and a fan of Chikki, you HAVE to visit Munichalai! It’s this incredible marketplace buzzing with activity and home to what feels like over 100 small-scale Chikki manufacturers!
Trying them all has been a delicious adventure, but I’ve definitely found my absolute favourite: the Sri Lakshmi Vilas Brand.
It’s a smaller team, mostly powered by amazing women workers
, and their dedication truly shines through. They’ve managed to consistently maintain top-notch quality, fair pricing, and incredible freshness in every bite. You can really taste the passion and the care they put into selecting their raw materials. It’s more than just a snack; it’s a taste of tradition and hard work! Highly recommend seeking them out in the market!

Chikki is loved by one and all of all ages.
In Rajasthan and Delhi NCR, it is called Gajak and Chikki in MH.
Wonderful to read, adding a small local small business - and great hint to also share that it is ‘Edit Pending’ status
Amazing support for small local business @MathanVibranarayan as always - greatly admire it.

Fascinating! I love chikkis, especially a softer version, “fudge,” with different flavors like chocolate, regular, etc.
This is a perfect addition to the Dil Se Local series. These shops are rare to find and need to be added to the map.
In the same way, I added a traditional homemaker in Belgaum who makes delicious “Tuppada Mandige” or “Mande” (मांडे in Marathi). This reminded me to write a post on that; thanks for that too.
I will do it shortly.
Thanks for that. @MathanVibranarayan
Cheers!

@AjitThite sir chocolate chikki that’s soft like fudge? That’s the upgrade I didn’t know we needed. Sounds like a sweet detour from the usual crunch!
Will search for it locally.
@Gouri.PS ah, Kappallandi Mittai! Love that name. The square ones are definitely the OG. But you must try that round too, but a good mittai is good no matter the shape.
