Mapping Heritage: Putting age-old indigenious sweet-maker on Google Maps to Preserve Tradition

Hello LGs,

I was encouraged by @MathanVibranarayan 's post " Traditional Snacks Are Back: Tadapeanuts Munichalai’s Sweet Secret for sharing about this great age-old traditional sweet-maker from Belgaum.

During my recent trip to Belgaum, I had the pleasure of visiting Bhatt Mandewale, an age-old establishment that preserves the traditional craft of making Belgavi Maande in Marathi and Mandige in Kannada. These delicate, paper-thin sweet flatbreads are a true testament to Karnataka’s rich culinary heritage, and they are frequently served at weddings and festive occasions.

Here is my review of the place.
Despite their cultural significance, many traditional artisans, such as Bhatt Mandewale, are little known outside of their hometown. Adding such establishments to Google Maps is about more than just navigation; it’s about preserving heritage, supporting small businesses, and making these culinary treasures more accessible to a wider audience. Imagine a visitor looking for authentic Belgaum delicacies discovering Bhatt Mandewale through a simple search!

Google Maps enables local guides and food enthusiasts to highlight traditional makers, giving them the visibility they deserve. By putting these artisans on the map, we help to preserve centuries-old traditions, promote tourism, and highlight local craftsmanship. So, the next time you come across a heritage food maker, don’t just savor their delicacies—put them on the map so that the rest of the world can enjoy their legacy!

Have you discovered any other hidden culinary gems that deserve recognition? Let us ensure that they are not lost to time!

Cheers!

I had heard about Maande a lot for several decades from people who made that in their homes but never shared it with us.

Now I get to see them, though still unclear how they might taste.

Great gesture featuring this traditional delicacy via Google Maps and Connect @AjitThite

Another reason to stop over in Belgaon, other than for Kunda to taste the Maande.

Superb post :+1:
What can be more DilSeLocal than this …!

Thanks to @MathanVibranarayan for the inspiration :handshake:

Yes, they taste sweet and can be served along with more sugar, ghee, and sometimes milk. This is kind of a prerequisite for any wedding or the Maharashtra-Karnataka border, especially.

Belgaum itself is an amazing place with one clock tower at the center of the city. I did not get the time to visit there.

हो , दिसते तसे , पण मोठं असते पोळी सारखे खुसखुशीत , त्यावर मग अजून पिठीसाखर , तूप आणि कधी कधी बुडवून खायला कोमट दूध पण देतात .

मजा येते . @Shrut19

That’s the great and the least support we must do as a Local Guide.

I am happy going through your review and shared photos of this added place by you @AjitThite. It is strange that such an old aged traditional sweet maker establishment was deprived of the wider reach so far.

I am sure slowly and gradually even on Maps we will see the numerous footprints.

Thanks for adding on Maps to conserve such treasure of our country.
